Professor Nuria Triana-Toribio, Head of Hispanic Studies and co-director of the Centre for the Interdisciplinary Study of Film and the Moving Image, will be part of a discussion accompanying a screening of The Orphanage at the Gulbenkian, Kent’s on-campus cinema.

The Orphanage  is a 2007 Spanish horror film, providing the directorial debut of J. A. Bayona and produced by Guillermo del Toro, the director of the acclaimed Pan’s Labyrinth (2006).

The film tells of a mother, Laura, who returns to the orphanage where she grew up accompanied by her husband Carlos and their 7-year-old son Simón. She dreams of restoring and reopening the long-abandoned mansion as a home for disabled children, but the place awakens Simón’s imagination, and he soon begins playing not-so-innocent games.

Nuria will be discussing the film with Dr Tamar Jeffers McDonald, Reader in Film Studies, and Dr Cecilia Sayad, Lecturer in Film Studies.

The film and discussion will be held on 4 March, 9.30pm. For more details of the event, including how to book, please see the page:
