Porchlight Internship – exclusively for SECL students

The School of European Culture and Languages have developed an internship for 1-3 months during the Easter vacation onwards, specifically for SECL students with local homeless charity, Porchlight.

Role description

We are offering a Professional Competency Placement designed to enable you to develop and demonstrate your professional skills, experience and behaviours (competencies).

We are looking to design a placement around the needs of both the charity and you.

This will include working face-to-face with vulnerable people in supporting our housing, community and support services.

Placement Activities

  • Go on Outreach sessions to engage with rough sleepers and help to move them in to suitable accommodation
  • Support house meetings in hostels for Homeless People, where residents can discuss any issues and plan improvements to their housing
  • Deliver training to Homeless and Vulnerable People and/or support their learning in areas such as literacy, numeracy, personal development and communication
  • Advocate on behalf of Homeless People at interviews for accommodation and with other agencies e.g. Job Centre Plus, Drug or Alcohol Support, Local Authority etc.
  • Interview Homeless People for Accommodation and access to our support services
  • Take part in working groups to develop charity wide responses to key issues e.g. The development of our hostels or quality assessing all services
  • Assist in specific fundraising events; communicating to the general public about issues of Homelessness
  • Other tasks as agreed with team which meet both your needs and those of the charity and it’s service users

Terms

Details of all terms are to be agreed at the beginning of your placement;

  • 6 weeks from Monday 8th April 2013
  • Flexible hours but it is envisaged that this will amount to a minimum of 16 hours per week
  • 40p per mile petrol, or bus/train fares paid for travel to and from place of work

Where the role will be based

The charity has projects and offices across Kent and in Croydon, though it is envisaged that the role will be based in Canterbury. This will be negotiated according to your needs and those of the charity.
