Contemporary works in cognitive and neurosciences, developmental and evolutionary psychology, and animal ethology have shown how empathy is critical for the development of sociality in humans and nonhumans.<\/p>\n<p>Empathy has also received theoretical attention in anthropology, cultural studies and philosophy as a key capacity for constituting one\u2019s sense of self and others. Despite this attention, empathy has rarely been addressed in an interdisciplinary way, and even less so in relation to the concept of radical otherness.<\/p>\n<p>On June 7 The <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/cer\/\">Ethnographic Research Centre<\/a>\u00a0hosted a Book Launch to celebrating the launch of, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/Conversations-on-Empathy-Interdisciplinary-Perspectives-on-Imagination\/Mezzenzana-Peluso\/p\/book\/9781032019154\"><em>Conversations on Empathy Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Imagination and Radical Othering<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> edited By\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carsoncenter.uni-muenchen.de\/staff_fellows\/programs-and-projects\/francesca_mezzenzana\/index.html\">Francesca Mezzenzana<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/551\/peluso-daniela\">Dr Daniela Peluso<\/a> (SAC) selected by Routledge as an Open Access Volume.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The Book serves as a model for successful collaboration across Divisions by a team of cross-disciplinary academics (SAC, Psychology, School of the Arts, Sociology and Tizard) which stemmed from a successful in-house <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2019\/05\/02\/conversations-on-empathy\/\">workshop<\/a>.&#8217; co-editor Peluso explained &#8216;We hope that this book launch will serve as an inspiration for future collaborations that will result in Research Excellence.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/1237\/biner-zerrin-%C3%B6zlem\"> Zerrin Ozlem Biner<\/a> (CoDirector of Ethnographic Research Center, SAC) -welcomed everyone, Daniela Peluso (SAC) spoke on \u2018Why Empathy?\u2019 and Murray Smith (School of the Arts) talked about \u2018Empathy Redux\u2019, Heather Ferguson (Psychology) presented The \u2018Empathy Lab\u2019 \u2013 A Psychological Exploration, whilst Carolyn Pedwall (Sociology) focussed on &#8216;Empathy\u2019s Entanglements&#8217;.
