{"id":9112,"date":"2023-03-01T07:57:56","date_gmt":"2023-03-01T07:57:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/?p=9112"},"modified":"2023-03-01T08:12:02","modified_gmt":"2023-03-01T08:12:02","slug":"use-of-micro-ct-scanner-to-verify-bronze-age-toddler-shoe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2023\/03\/01\/use-of-micro-ct-scanner-to-verify-bronze-age-toddler-shoe\/","title":{"rendered":"Use of micro CT scanner to verify Bronze Age Toddler shoe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While mudlarking, in a Kent river, a Ramsgate archaeologist Steve Tomlinson discovered a 3000-year-old shoe. <span style=\"color: black\">He sent it off for tests at the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre\u2019s carbon-dating unit in East Kilbride. <\/span><span style=\"color: black\">The shoe, which is leather and just 15cm (6in) long, appears to be the oldest found in Britain, dating from between 888-781BC. It is thought to have been worn by a child, no more than three years old.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We\u2019re pretty confident that this is the oldest in the UK&#8230;&#8217; Tomlinson said &#8216;We cannot find records of any others from that period. We also believe it\u2019s the smallest Bronze Age shoe in the world.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Scans here and at Canterbury Christ Church have found further details. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/2776\/dunmore-christopher\">Dr Chris Dunmore<\/a>, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/sbrc\/facilities\/\">ICLS<\/a> scanned the shoe in its Diondo D1 microtomographic scanner revealing that the shoe had several layers which says something about its construction.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9118\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9118\" style=\"width: 498px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-9118\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/files\/2023\/03\/SAC-Lab-12-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"498\" height=\"332\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9118\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr Chris Dunmore and the Diondo D1.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"ui-provider vw b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z ab ac ae af ag ah ai aj ak\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8216;It was really great to work with a local archaeological conservator at CSI Sittingbourne, \u00a0to unveil new deeper details of this fascinating find. Using the Micro-CT Scanner we built a 3D reconstruction of this tiny fragment of material culture. The equipment at the University of Kent, found several layers in the sole of the shoe, which tells about the way it was made in the Bronze Age.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9116\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9116\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9116\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/files\/2023\/02\/Toddler_shoe_281p.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9116\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This gif gives you a toe-on view before heading through the sole of the shoe to the heel.
