Dr Rakopoulos has most recently published on the themes of citizenship, property, statehood and conspiracy theory. His latest book <a href=\"https:\/\/manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk\/9781526167361\/passport-island\/\"><em>Passport Island: The Market for EU Citizenship in Cyprus<\/em><\/a>\u00a0explores the timely issue of elite Russian migration to \u2018Europe\u2019 (Manchester University Press, 2023). He is also the editor of\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.berghahnbooks.com\/title\/RakopoulosGlobal\">The Global Life of Austerity<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and co-editor of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/Towards-an-Anthropology-of-Wealth-Imagination-Substance-Value\/Rakopoulos-Rio\/p\/book\/9780367661557\"><em>Towards an Anthropology of Wealth<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(with Knut Rio).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/english\/people\/146\/kemal-bahriye\">Dr<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/english\/people\/146\/kemal-bahriye\"> Bahriye<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/english\/people\/146\/kemal-bahriye\"> Kemal<\/a> , Senior Lecturer in Contemporary and Postcolonial Literature at the University of Kent, will be our second speaker providing a response to Dr Rakopoulos&#8217;s talk, from a Critical Postcolonial Literature point of view. Dr Kemal is the author of a research monograph entitled <em>Writing Cyprus: Postcolonial and Partition Literatures of Place and Space<\/em>\u00a0explores English, Greek and Turkish writing about Cyprus in the context of the island\u2019s political and cultural history of colonisation, partition and conflicting identities.<\/p>\n<p>The event will draw examples from Cyprus to reflect about coloniality and post-coloniality. Rakopoulos will give a provocative ethnographic paper that captures colonial complexity. Then, Dr Bahriye Kemal will reflect on the affordances of Literature in helping us understand colonial and post-colonial Cyprus.
