{"id":8562,"date":"2022-11-09T18:41:09","date_gmt":"2022-11-09T18:41:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/?p=8562"},"modified":"2022-11-08T11:41:46","modified_gmt":"2022-11-08T11:41:46","slug":"conservation-biologist-steve-allain-wins-prestigious-national-wildlife-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2022\/11\/09\/conservation-biologist-steve-allain-wins-prestigious-national-wildlife-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Conservation Biologist Steve Allain wins Prestigious National Wildlife Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\"> The National Biodiversity Network awards recognise and celebrate the outstanding contributions adults and young people are making to wildlife recording and data sharing, which is helping to improve our understanding of the UK\u2019s biodiversity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\"><span class=\"x_x_ContentPasted0\">The winners of the UK-wide <a href=\"https:\/\/nbn.org.uk\/news-events-publications\/nbn-awards-for-wildlife-recording\/\">NBN Awards for Wildlife Recording 2022<\/a> were announced at a ceremony on Wednesday 9 November 2022, following the culmination of the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/nbn.org.uk\/news-events-publications\/nbn-conference-2\/nbn-conference-2022\/\">NBN Conference<\/a>, taking place at the Natural History Museum, in London. PhD candidate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/2226\/allain-steven\"><span class=\"x_x_ContentPasted0\">Steven Allain <\/span><\/a><span class=\"x_x_ContentPasted0\">is the<\/span><span class=\"x_x_ContentPasted0\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"x_x_ContentPasted0\">w<\/span><span class=\"x_x_ContentPasted0\">inner of the<\/span><span class=\"x_x_ContentPasted0\"> 2022 NBN Award for Wildlife Recording and the awards committee had this to say about his work:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\"><span class=\"x_x_ContentPasted0\">&#8216;Steve has worked hard to both generate and verify records of amphibians and reptiles in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Norfolk since 2016 and in the last two years in Kent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\"><span class=\"x_x_ContentPasted0\">All of the records that Steven generates are shared with the local Amphibian and Reptile Groups. He is\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"x_x_ContentPasted0\">Chairman of the Cambridgeshire &amp; Peterborough Amphibian and Reptile Group, and also the Norfolk Amphibian and Reptile Group as well as being Volunteer Officer for the Bedfordshire Reptile and Amphibian Group.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"x_x_ContentPasted0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\"><span class=\"x_x_ContentPasted0\">Steven is often consulted by Animal and Plant Health Agency regarding the presence of non-native amphibian and reptile species in the UK, and his passion and enthusiasm for amphibians and reptiles, and his unique ways of engaging people helped him to also win the 2022 Anglia Ruskin University Sustainability Champion Award.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal x_elementToProof\"><span class=\"x_x_ContentPasted0\">&#8216;The main thing that excites me about recording amphibians and reptiles, is that they are historically under-recorded.&#8217; Steve says &#8216;This means that it is fairly easy to discover new populations of even the most widespread species that no one knew were present in an area.
