{"id":8298,"date":"2022-10-03T10:58:04","date_gmt":"2022-10-03T10:58:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/?p=8298"},"modified":"2022-10-11T13:53:06","modified_gmt":"2022-10-11T13:53:06","slug":"kents-diamond-garden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2022\/10\/03\/kents-diamond-garden\/","title":{"rendered":"Kent\u2019s Diamond Garden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday 23<sup>rd<\/sup> September students and staff gathered together for Kent\u2019s Diamond Garden Planting Event hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/campaigns\/lets-grow#sustainability\">Sustainability Team<\/a> at Kent. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/staff-student-news\/2022\/08\/24\/kents-diamond-garden-grow-with-us\/\">Kent\u2019s Diamond Garden<\/a> is a three-year project encouraging biodiversity at both our Canterbury and Medway campuses whilst celebrating the University of Kent\u2019s upcoming 60<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary in 2025. Because orchards are mosaics of trees, grasses, shrubs and wildflowers, they support a wide range of wildlife. As fruit trees age quickly, they create the perfect habitats for invertebrates and birds, such as the lesser spotted woodpecker.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dr Devin Finaughty from the School of Anthropology and Conservation represented the Division of Human and Social Sciences and the Division of Natural Sciences told us <em>&#8216;The site is at the southern slopes of campus, accessible to the public and the vision is for it to be a wild orchard.&#8217; <\/em>He planted two trees \u2013 one cherry and one pear to represent the two divisions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8357\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8357\" style=\"width: 452px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8357\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/files\/2022\/09\/CFC452A0-A45E-4CEB-9C9D-C9A9E44F422B_1_105_c.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"452\" height=\"603\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8357\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Digging In Version 1: Dr Devin Finaughty representing the Division of Human and Social Sciences at the tree planting ceremony<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Students also joined alongside the divisional representatives, including incoming first year BA Human Biology and Behaviour students, who will be able to watch fruits of their labour grow over the three years they are studying at Kent.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8392\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8392\" style=\"width: 438px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8392\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/files\/2022\/10\/Diamond-conservationists-crop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"438\" height=\"541\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8392\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Digging in Version &#8220;: The Conservation Society contributing their ideas to the Diamond garden landscape.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Co-creation is at the heart of the project. The orchard space will incorporate distinct features, suggested and chosen by students, and will represent the six divisions. These could include seating areas, performance spaces, quiet areas, and anything else you can come up with. How should we make use of the space for HSS<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">?
