{"id":8257,"date":"2022-09-30T15:54:31","date_gmt":"2022-09-30T15:54:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/?p=8257"},"modified":"2022-10-07T11:34:21","modified_gmt":"2022-10-07T11:34:21","slug":"hands-fingers-knees-and-feet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2022\/09\/30\/hands-fingers-knees-and-feet\/","title":{"rendered":"Hands, Fingers, Knees and Feet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">PhD candidate Samar Syeda was one of several of our researchers who presented at the 12th annual ESHE meeting and shares her experience of her first-conference triumphs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"8lg25\" data-offset-key=\"eaf2j-0-0\">\n<p data-offset-key=\"eaf2j-0-0\">In Southwest Germany, our SAC students, staff, and PhD candidates attended the 12th annual <span data-offset-key=\"6tqug-0-0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eshe.eu\/aboutus\/\">ESHE<\/a> <\/span>meeting at the Neue Aula, University of T\u00fcbingen on the 22nd &#8211; 24th of September. The <span data-offset-key=\"eaf2j-0-0\"> European Society for the Study of Human Evolution promotes the broad field of research which investigates how humans evolved both biologically and culturally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-offset-key=\"eaf2j-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"eaf2j-0-0\">This year&#8217;s ESHE meeting was PhD candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/4149\/syeda-samar\">Samar Syeda<\/a>\u2019s first ever In-Person conference, so naturally she presented!<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-offset-key=\"eaf2j-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"eaf2j-0-0\">Samar thoroughly enjoyed sharing some of her research: <\/span>\u2018Reconstructing hand use in Australopithecus sediba and Homo naledi: mapping variation in cortical thickness across the proximal and intermediate phalanges.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-offset-key=\"eaf2j-0-0\">&#8220;It went great!!\u2019 she said \u2018I was a bit nervous but everyone at ESHE was super lovely and interested, so I was able to explain my research well without getting flustered&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p data-offset-key=\"eaf2j-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"907ju-0-0\">Give a big hand to Samar!<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-offset-key=\"eaf2j-0-0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8371\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/files\/2022\/10\/MicrosoftTeams-image-7.jpg\" alt=\"eshe\" width=\"560\" height=\"420\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-offset-key=\"eaf2j-0-0\">She was joined by fellow SAC PhD candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/4183\/lukova-andrea\">Andrea Lukova<\/a>, who studies trabecular distribution of the hominin knee and shared the results of her research on &#8216;Trabecular distribution in extant apes and australopithecus sediba&#8217;. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/4032\/tsegai-zewdi\">Zewdi Tsegai<\/a>, a postdoctoral researcher funded by a Marie Sk\u0142odowska-Curie Individual Fellowship, gave a Pecha Kucha on the Homo floresiensis foot: Reconstructing foot use from the internal bone of the metatarsals LB1&#8242;.<\/p>\n<p data-offset-key=\"eaf2j-0-0\">This was also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/4151\/drummond-clarke-rhianna\">Rhianna Drummond-Clarke<\/a>&#8216;s first In-Person conference, presenting a talk on Issa chimpanzee locomotor behaviour, whilst both Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/546\/kivell-tracy\">Tracy Kivell<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/2776\/dunmore-christopher-james\">Chris Dunmore<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/556\/skinner-matthew\">Dr Matthew Skinner<\/a> were in attendance as PhD supervisors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PhD candidate Samar Syeda was one of several of our researchers who presented at the 12th annual ESHE meeting and shares her experience of her &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2022\/09\/30\/hands-fingers-knees-and-feet\/\">Read&nbsp;more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":66395,"featured_media":8258,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[58,124],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8257"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/66395"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=8257"}],"version-history":[{"count":11,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8257\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":8400,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8257\/revisions\/8400"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/8258"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=8257"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=8257"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=8257"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
