{"id":7243,"date":"2021-11-29T11:55:29","date_gmt":"2021-11-29T11:55:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/?p=7243"},"modified":"2021-11-29T11:55:29","modified_gmt":"2021-11-29T11:55:29","slug":"sac-alumni-make-us-proud-at-this-years-tusk-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2021\/11\/29\/sac-alumni-make-us-proud-at-this-years-tusk-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"SAC Alumni make us proud at this year&#8217;s Tusk Awards."},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">Many, many congratulations to DICE alumni Simson Uri-Khob from Namibia and Rachel Ikemeh from Nigeria!<\/p>\n<p>Now in its ninth year, the <span class=\"whiteHeader\">Tusk Conservation Awards<\/span> ceremony was held in London honouring five &#8216;conservation luminaries&#8217; from Africa, two of them are <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/dice\/\">DICE<\/a> alumni.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuskawards.com\/simson-uri-khob-2021\/\">Simson Uri-Khob <\/a>has worked with the Save the Rhino Trust (SRT) for 30 years, becoming CEO in 2015 and won the Prince William Award for Conservation in Africa describing him as a &#8216;gifted conservationist&#8217; saying \u00a0&#8216;It is impossible not to feel his passion, commitment and honest open heart when he talks about protecting the species.&#8217;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"blockquote_text\">It\u2019s not always that you see a rhino. There aren\u2019t that many around. But you know God graced them to be on earth.<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuskawards.com\/rachel-ikemeh-2021\/\">Rachel Ikemeh <\/a>has focused on species-based and landscape-level conservation efforts. In 2012, Rachel established the SW\/Niger Delta Forest Project and has served as its director since and was Tusk award for Conservation in Africa finalist. They commented:<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Rachel\u2019s persistence in working in one of the most insecure regions in the world, building strong community relations, establishing a community conservancy, and saving a Critically Endangered primate under these conditions is highly commendable and deserves recognition.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"blockquote_text\">Conservation in Nigeria is hard, but we need to face it head on. We hope that the work we\u2019re doing will be carried on by the future generation.<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We&#8217;re so proud of their work and it&#8217;s brilliant that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuskawards.com\/\">The Tusk organisation<\/a> have recognised all their achievements in this way.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many, many congratulations to DICE alumni Simson Uri-Khob from Namibia and Rachel Ikemeh from Nigeria!
