{"id":6113,"date":"2021-05-06T15:51:18","date_gmt":"2021-05-06T15:51:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/?p=6113"},"modified":"2021-05-06T15:51:23","modified_gmt":"2021-05-06T15:51:23","slug":"professor-tracy-kivell-project-highlighted-in-ercs-funding-success-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2021\/05\/06\/professor-tracy-kivell-project-highlighted-in-ercs-funding-success-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Tracy Kivell project highlighted in ERC\u2019s funding success campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content content--main\">\n<div class=\"article__content\">\n<p>School of Anthropolgy Head of School\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/546\/kivell-tracy\">Professor Tracy Kivell<\/a>\u00a0has been recognised along with 14 other grantees to celebrate the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/erc.europa.eu\/\">European Research Council (ERC)<\/a>\u2019s milestone of funding 10,000 grantees.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, Professor Kivell was awarded an ERC starting grant to carry out a research project titled \u2018GRASP \u2013 Evolution of the human hand: Grasping trees and tools\u2019. This research unearthed the secrets of human evolution through the analysis of 2-million-year-old fossilised hands.<\/p>\n<p>The ERC grant allowed Kivell to further her research interests from primate locomotion and biomechanics into the study of internal bone structure. The depth and breadth of the research enabled Professor Kivell\u2019s project team to demonstrate that some fossil human species still used their hands for climbing, while at the same time being capable of complex tool use. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/2776\/dunmore-christopher-james\">Dr Christopher Dunmore<\/a>, who completed his PhD with Professor Kivell and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/556\/skinner-matthew\">Professor Matthew Skinner<\/a>\u00a0(a collaborator on her grant) at Kent, played a critical role in the research.<\/p>\n<p>Kivell\u2019s research project has been highlighted in the ERC\u2019s success campaign \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/erc.europa.eu\/how-ERC-transformed-science\/\">How the ERC transformed science<\/a>\u2019, showcasing how its grantees are making a real impact on people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Kivell said: \u2018This grant enabled me to take a really multidisciplinary approach to reconstructing behaviour from the past. The new fossils revealed combinations of anatomy that could never have been predicted from just looking at humans or apes.
