We&#8217;ve had snowstorms AND sunshine, which brought a sense of fun and hope for many. The community here at the School of Anthropology and Conservation has continued to provide all sorts for us to write about, here\u2019s a summary of what we have been up to:<\/p>\n<h2>Our academics (and students!) have continued to contribute to some fantastic research<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/556\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/556\/skinner-matthew\">Professor Matthew Skinner<\/a> was a member of the team of experts who made <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2021\/02\/01\/jersey-neanderthal-teeth-hint-at-interbreeding-with-modern-humans\/\">the discovery<\/a> that Neanderthal teeth found in Jersey hint at inbreeding with modern humans.<\/li>\n<li>A new study led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/dice\/\">Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE)<\/a> has looked at how climate change is impacting elephant crop-raiding patterns and the increase in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2021\/02\/05\/human-elephant-conflict-in-kenya-heightens-with-increase-in-crop-raiding\/\">human-elephant interactions<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>MSc graduate Harshini Jhala <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2021\/02\/24\/student-research-work-prompts-new-action-for-protecting-rhinos-in-india\/\">published research<\/a> from her MSc at the School of Anthropology and Conservation, exploring the reintroduction sites for the endangered Indian greater one-horned rhinoceros (<em>Rhinoceros unicornis<\/em>) and the swamp buffalo (<em>Bubalus arnee<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate\/189\/ethnobotany\">Ethnobotany MSc<\/a> Graduate <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/cbcd\/person\/kay-evelina-lewis-jones\/\">Dr Kay Evelina Lewis-Jones<\/a> explains what <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2021\/02\/22\/so-you-want-to-be-an-ethnobotanist\/\">an ethnobotanist is, and how she came to be in the Guardian\u2019s Education section.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5860\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5860\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5860\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/files\/2021\/03\/Harshini-.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"514\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5860\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harshini Jhala conducts her field work in India.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Our students have shared their experiences and thoughts on a wide range of topics<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Stage 2 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/undergraduate\/30\/wildlife-conservation\">Wildlife Conservation<\/a> student Ben Mott has written an thought-provoking piece on the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2021\/02\/23\/the-resurgence-of-eco-fascism\/\">resurgence of eco-fascism<\/a>, and the dangers it poses.<\/li>\n<li>Stage 3 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/undergraduate\/36\/anthropology\">Anthropology<\/a> student Grace Smithers as written <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2021\/02\/26\/im-so-grateful-i-persevered-with-university\/\">an encouraging piece about her struggles when she first started University<\/a>, and how happy she is that she persevered.<\/li>\n<li>Stage 2 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/undergraduate\/63\/environmental-social-science\">Environmental Social Sciences<\/a> student Viola Favaretto was inspired by her module on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/modules\/module\/GEOG5005\">Cities and The Climate Emergency<\/a> and wrote an article about the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2021\/02\/15\/cities-and-the-climate-emergency-insights-into-rotterdams-plan\/\">cities becoming more climate resilient<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>We\u2019ve announced current and future events<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Lois Mitchell, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate\/274\/conservation-project-management\">MSc Conservation Project Management<\/a>, and Jack Bedford, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate\/273\/conservation-biology\">MSc Conservation Biology<\/a>, are members of the Green Spaces Subgroup within the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SACSWG\">Sustainability Working Group (SWG<\/a>). They explain what a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2021\/02\/23\/what-is-a-bioblitz-and-why-is-the-sustainability-working-group-hosting-one\/\">Bioblitz is and why the SWG is organising one for the Spring\/Summer<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>On Tuesday 9<sup>th<\/sup> March <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/1914\/rock-rokem-jonathan\">Dr Jonathan Rock Rokem<\/a> is to give the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/case\/\">Centre for Architecture and the Sustainable Environment (CASE)<\/a> Open Lecture. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2021\/02\/26\/what-is-the-role-of-the-city-in-the-global-climate-crisis\/\">The lecture will be on why cities need to take the lead in the climate crisis.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Our academics and students have been hosting <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2021\/02\/17\/undergraduate-applicant-drop-ins-on-zoom\/\">drop-in sessions<\/a> for Undergraduate Applicants to answer any questions and discuss the courses and life at Kent.
