{"id":5531,"date":"2020-11-17T17:59:52","date_gmt":"2020-11-17T17:59:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/?p=5531"},"modified":"2020-11-19T18:06:50","modified_gmt":"2020-11-19T18:06:50","slug":"what-will-be-the-impact-of-40m-funding-for-english-green-spaces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2020\/11\/17\/what-will-be-the-impact-of-40m-funding-for-english-green-spaces\/","title":{"rendered":"What will be the impact of \u00a340m funding for English green spaces?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following the announcement that the UK Government will invest \u00a340m into green spaces in England to help restore species and combat climate change,\u00a0Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/473\/bride-ian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ian Bride<\/a>, Reader in Biodiversity Management at the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/dice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE)<\/a>, said:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In my view, although the money is obviously welcome, its effectiveness will clearly depend on how it is spent. If it is to be oriented at conservation activities in the conventional sense, this is all well and good. It might well be used to try and preserve and maintain particular landscapes and habitats, and hopefully be oriented at developing viable livelihoods at the same time. Yet this is but a small step in addressing the fundamental issues concerning long-term environmental changes precipitated by climatic and social changes, and how our society and economy is to effectively (and quickly) reform itself in order to create an ecologically sustainable future.
