{"id":5412,"date":"2020-10-15T09:28:40","date_gmt":"2020-10-15T09:28:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/?p=5412"},"modified":"2020-10-15T09:28:40","modified_gmt":"2020-10-15T09:28:40","slug":"future-leaders-fellow-to-explore-positive-effect-of-group-bonding-on-social-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2020\/10\/15\/future-leaders-fellow-to-explore-positive-effect-of-group-bonding-on-social-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Future Leaders Fellow to explore positive effect of group bonding on social issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cognitive anthropologist Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/3472\/newson-martha\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martha Newson<\/a> has joined the School of Anthropology and Conservation (SAC) with funding from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)\u2019s Future Leaders Fellowship scheme to investigate how group bonding can be used to address major social issues.<\/p>\n<p>The research will explore the impact of individuals bonding in groups on the likelihood of reoffending, the building of sustainable societies and reducing football fan disorder and racism. This work will involve psychological surveys, hormonal analyses, interviews and novel interventions ranging from computer-based models to women\u2019s groups.<\/p>\n<p>Over an initial four-year period, Dr Newson\u2019s research will be carried out across the UK, Australia and the USA. The research grant is worth up to \u00a31.5 million \u2013 with the potential for further funding for an additional three years.<\/p>\n<p>Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/486\/johns-sarah\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sarah Johns<\/a> (SAC), Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/people\/212\/abrams-dominic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dominic Abrams <\/a>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">School of Psychology<\/a>) and Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/social-policy-sociology-social-research\/people\/1536\/stevens-alex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Stevens<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/social-policy-sociology-social-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research<\/a>) will provide Dr Newson with mentorship throughout the project.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Newson, who also holds the position of Research Associate at the University of Oxford\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icea.ox.ac.uk\/centre-anthropology-mind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centre for the Study of Social Cohesion<\/a>, said, &#8220;I am delighted to be awarded a Future Leaders Fellowship, which gives me long-term resources and flexibility to further develop my research. This project aims to demonstrate the importance of group bonding on social issues that are experienced worldwide.
