With staff and students working remotely, either planning research, consolidating data from earlier fieldwork or finding ways to study whilst in isolation, here is a summary of what has been going on amongst members of the School during the past month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Academic news<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not content with hosting <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2020\/04\/01\/dice-annual-lecture-2020-dr-jane-goodall-gombe-and-beyond\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jane Goodall for the 30th anniversary DICE Annual Lecture<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2020\/02\/24\/queens-anniversary-prize-is-presented-for-the-work-of-dice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">receiving a distinguished Queen&#8217;s Anniversary Prize<\/a>, two alumni from the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/dice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE)<\/a> have been named as winners of prestigious Whitley Awards 2020. Patr\u00edcia Medici, who completed her PhD at DICE in 2010, was announced as the Gold Winner for her research into tapirs as conservation flagships in Brazil, building on her original Whitley Award received in 2008. Rachel Ikemeh, who graduated from the School in 2014, was also named a winner for her work advancing participatory conservation action for rare chimpanzees in Nigeria. The full story is <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2020\/05\/02\/dice-alumni-named-winners-of-prestigious-whitley-awards-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/546\/kivell-tracy\">Tracy Kivell<\/a>\u00a0and Dr\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/556\/skinner-matthew\">Matthew Skinner<\/a> have created <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2020\/04\/02\/human-evolution-educational-materials-now-available-to-download\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">several interactive educational materials aimed at primary and secondary school children to improve their understanding of human evolution<\/a> to keep children mentally stimulated and entertained with home education.<\/p>\n<p>Lecturer in Conservation Science, Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/480\/gardner-charlie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charlie Gardner<\/a>, wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2020\/04\/20\/natures-comeback-no-the-coronavirus-pandemic-threatens-the-worlds-wildlife-dr-charlie-gardner-writes-for-the-conversation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">piece for The Conversation<\/a> warning that, whilst the newly emboldened wildlife proliferating in empty Western cities brings joy in these times of lockdown, and a welcome reminder of nature\u2019s resilience, the world\u2019s wildlife won\u2019t be saved by a temporary economic lull. To achieve that, nations are going to have to ensure conservation moves to the top of the agenda in the post-pandemic world.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Lecturer in Social Anthropology, Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/551\/peluso-daniela\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daniela Peluso<\/a>, is chairing the COVID-19 taskforce for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salsa-tipiti.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America (SALSA).<\/a> The taskforce have been urgently working to develop a website that collates articles, declarations, links and audio-visual materials to highlight indigenous, government and non-government actions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Read more about the initiative <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2020\/05\/04\/dr-daniela-peluso-chairs-the-society-for-the-anthropology-of-lowland-south-americas-working-group-for-covid-19-in-amazonia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And Postdoctoral Research Associate in Biological Anthropology, Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/981\/bardo-ameline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ameline Bardo<\/a>, has been awarded a prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.physanth.org\/about\/awards-funding-and-other-opportunities\/professional-development-grant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cobb Professional Development Grant<\/a>\u00a0from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.physanth.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Association of Physical Anthropologists (AAPA)<\/a>. The grant will allow Dr Bardo to run the project \u2018A helping hand: Investigating the 3D motion of human hand bones during Palaeolithic tool behaviours\u2019. Full details <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2020\/04\/06\/dr-ameline-bardo-receives-a-grant-from-the-american-association-of-physical-anthropologists-aapa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Postgraduate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As most current DICE Masters\u2019 students have had to alter their fieldwork plans because of the COVID-19 pandemic, alumna Sarah Humphrys, who studied for an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate\/271\/conservation-and-rural-development\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MSc in Conservation and Rural Development<\/a> in 2018-19 shared both an <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2020\/05\/01\/dice-alumna-on-her-dissertation-fieldwork-in-madagascar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">account of her time conducting field research in Madagascar this time last year<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2020\/05\/05\/dice-alumna-shares-video-of-her-fieldwork-highlights-in-madagascar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video of her fieldwork highlights<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Currently studying for an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate\/789\/social-anthropology-with-visual-ethnography\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MA in Social Anthropology and Visual Ethnography<\/a>. Farah Hallaba has been making <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCod4ciHUVv-0YP5m0IZBomw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">informal, short videos in Arabic explaining different aspects of what Anthropology is<\/a>. For the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2020\/04\/24\/4754\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eighth episode of Anthropology Bel3araby (Anthropology in Arabic)<\/a>, Farah explores how anthropology can help us understand the global crisis caused by the COVID-19 outbreak and how it can inform how societies will adapt to a post-Coronavirus world.<\/p>\n<p>And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/2943\/hayes-will\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Will Hayes, <\/a>studying for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate\/276\/biodiversity-management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PhD in Biodiversity Management<\/a> at DICE on predicting and navigating future discord between gold mining and other livelihoods in Guyana\u2019s rainforest, wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2020\/04\/27\/phd-student-will-hayes-on-his-recent-fieldwork-in-guyana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">field diary of his research trip to the country conducted at the start of this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Undergraduate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally, during these times of remote working and studying at home, undergraduate students from the School have been presenting tips and advice on methods and resources that will help us with our productivity and wellbeing.
