The University of Kent has received a highly prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education for the work of the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE)<\/a>. The presentation was made at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace on 20th February, 2020.<\/p>\n

The presentation was made by\u00a0the\u00a0Prince of Wales<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Duchess of Cornwall<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Kent was represented by Vice-Chancellor and President\u00a0Professor Karen Cox<\/a>, Chair of the University Council\u00a0Sir David Warren<\/a>, and\u00a0Professor Bob Smith<\/a>, Director of DICE.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Queen\u2019s Anniversary Prizes<\/a>\u00a0are awarded, within the honours system, for\u00a0exceptional contributions\u00a0by institutions in the higher and further education sectors.<\/p>\n

Since its foundation,\u00a0DICE\u00a0has been a\u00a0leader in its field and instrumental in supporting applied research and capacity building\u00a0in this area.<\/p>\n

It is the\u00a0largest\u00a0UK higher education institute to undertake this work, offering interdisciplinary\u00a0undergraduate\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0postgraduate\u00a0<\/a>courses in\u00a0wildlife conservation. To date, over\u00a01000 conservationists from over 100 countries\u00a0have trained with DICE.<\/p>\n

DICE leads projects in over\u00a050 countries, including\u00a0research on human wellbeing and nature, human-elephant conflict, oil palm deforestation, online illegal trade in protected species, national park planning and ecotourism projects, and the mapping of biodiversity through eDNA. This work is supported by funding from a range of sources\u00a0including NERC, Natural England, the government\u2019s Darwin Initiative and the Global Challenges Research Fund, part of the UK\u2019s official development assistance.<\/p>\n

This award is the\u00a0third Queen\u2019s Anniversary Prize to be presented to the University<\/a>, with previous awards recognising the work of the\u00a0Kent Law Clinic<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Tizard Centre.<\/a><\/p>\n
