In 2007, the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/cbcd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centre for Biocultural Diversity<\/a> received a small grant from the University&#8217;s Annual Fund to begin developing the space between the Marlowe Building and Giles Lane as a landscape containing useful plants on an East Kent-Japanese theme. The initial selection of species was made by former student James Wong and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/1048\/platten-simon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Simon Platten<\/a> (Leverhulme Fellow and Lecturer in Ethnobotany at the time).<\/p>\n<p>The catalogue was prepared by Ivan Casselman (a former MSc student and now PhD candidate at Southern Cross University, Australia). At present you will find the completed beds up against the wall of the rear of the Marlowe, which are maintained by the Estates Department. Most of the plants are labelled, but please browse our <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/files\/2020\/01\/ethno_garden.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Specimen Identification Sheet<\/a>\u00a0for further information.<\/p>\n<h2>Examples of ethnobotanical plants featured in our garden:<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Hemerocallis sp.
