{"id":4411,"date":"2020-01-24T17:46:32","date_gmt":"2020-01-24T17:46:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/?p=4411"},"modified":"2020-01-24T17:46:32","modified_gmt":"2020-01-24T17:46:32","slug":"conservationist-dr-jane-goodall-to-deliver-this-years-dice-lecture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2020\/01\/24\/conservationist-dr-jane-goodall-to-deliver-this-years-dice-lecture\/","title":{"rendered":"Conservationist Dr Jane Goodall to deliver this year&#8217;s DICE Lecture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>World-renowned conservationist and ethologist Dr Jane Goodall, DBE, Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace, will deliver this year&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/dice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE)<\/a> Lecture at the University&#8217;s Canterbury campus on the 25th February.<\/p>\n<p>Taking place in a sold-out Woolf College, Dr Goodall\u2019s public talk will be part of the University\u2019s Distinguished Visitor Lecture series, in which leading\u00a0academics and scientists\u00a0present their insights to\u00a0inspire and inform\u00a0others.<\/p>\n<p>Her talk, \u2018Gombe and Beyond: Chimpanzees, conservation and change\u2018, will address her early research at Gombe in eastern Tanzania which began in 1960, and the Jane Goodall Institute\u2019s programmes that have evolved over 60 years.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Goodall will also talk about her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rootsnshoots.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roots &amp; Shoots<\/a>\u00a0programme, soon to be joined by the University, which\u00a0empowers young people\u00a0of all ages in more than 50 countries to become involved in hands-on programmes to\u00a0benefit the community, animals (including domestic animals) and the environment\u00a0we all share.<\/p>\n<p>Before the lecture, Dr Goodall will meet with a group of\u00a0Kent students\u00a0to discuss how they will become involved in Roots &amp; Shoots, sharing her experiences in relation to their own\u00a0conservation work\u00a0and that of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kentunion.co.uk\/activities\/conservation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kent Conservation Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The event is\u00a0raising funds\u00a0for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.janegoodall.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jane Goodall Institute UK<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/dice\/postgraduate\/dice-msc-scholarship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DICE MSc Scholarship Fund, <\/a>and all the ticket proceeds will help\u00a0support conservation work around the world. There will be book sales and a signing with Dr Goodall\u00a0following her lecture.<\/p>\n<p>Professor<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/557\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/557\/smith-bob\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Bob Smith<\/a>, Director of DICE, said of the event: &#8220;We are absolutely delighted and honoured\u00a0that Dr Goodall is giving this year\u2019s DICE Lecture, given all her inspirational achievements.
