{"id":4074,"date":"2019-10-11T15:31:43","date_gmt":"2019-10-11T15:31:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/?p=4074"},"modified":"2019-10-17T10:04:01","modified_gmt":"2019-10-17T10:04:01","slug":"rspb-award-for-dr-janine-robinson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2019\/10\/11\/rspb-award-for-dr-janine-robinson\/","title":{"rendered":"RSPB Award for Dr Janine Robinson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/990\/robinson-janine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Janine Robinson<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/dice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology<\/a> (DICE) has been awarded the RSPB&#8217;s (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) Conservation Science Award for Outstanding PhD 2019, winning from a pool of nominations from across UK universities.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Robinson, a\u00a0conservation scientist\u00a0with a professional and academic background in wildlife trade research, policy and management, won this year\u2019s award for her PhD\u00a0<em>Supplying the exotic pet trade: conservation and livelihood implications <\/em>under the supervision of Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/555\/roberts-david\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Roberts<\/a><em>. <\/em>She received her\u00a0specially-commissioned medal\u00a0and\u00a0cash prize\u00a0during a ceremony at the Cambridge Conservation Initiative\u2019s\u00a0David Attenborough Building on 9th October.<\/p>\n<p>The standard of applications for this year\u2019s awards was described by\u00a0Dr David Gibbons, Head of the RSPB\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/our-work\/conservation\/centre-for-conservation-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centre for Conservation Science<\/a>, as &#8220;staggeringly impressive&#8221; and the award winners as &#8220;the cream of a very impressive crop&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Students from the University of Kent have won RSPB Conservation Science Awards on\u00a0three previous occasions: twice for DICE (Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2017\/06\/21\/dr-jake-bicknell-receives-conservation-award-for-outstanding-student\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jake Bicknell<\/a> in 2017 and Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2018\/08\/13\/dr-amy-hinsley-on-winning-the-rspb-conservation-award-for-outstanding-phd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amy Hinsley<\/a> in 2018), and once for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/mathematics-statistics-actuarial-science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science <\/a>(Dr Gurutzeta Guillera-Arroita in 2016).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4076 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/files\/2019\/10\/Janine-cropped-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Dr Robinson with her award\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/files\/2019\/10\/Janine-cropped-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/files\/2019\/10\/Janine-cropped.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>Dr Robinson said, &#8220;I am extremely honoured and excited to have received this award from the RSPB and have my work recognised in this way. DICE provides a unique and contemporary environment to explore complex conservation issues, such as the wildlife trade, through interdisciplinary research, and I am proud to be part of this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Her PhD used\u00a0social and economic methods\u00a0to investigate livelihoods in Madagascar, associated with the collection of wildlife for the\u00a0exotic pet trade, and explore issues surrounding conservation and sustainability. She is currently working on a range of\u00a0wildlife trade-related projects\u00a0at DICE and teaches on a number of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/dice\/undergraduate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">undergraduate\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/dice\/postgraduate\/research-postgraduate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">postgraduate<\/a>\u00a0modules.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to coming to Kent, Dr Robinson worked for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cites.org\/eng\/disc\/what.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CITES\u00a0<\/a>Scientific Authority at the Joint Nature Conservation Committee and subsequently the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/biaza.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums<\/a>.
