{"id":4028,"date":"2019-08-28T16:33:03","date_gmt":"2019-08-28T16:33:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/?p=4028"},"modified":"2019-08-28T16:33:03","modified_gmt":"2019-08-28T16:33:03","slug":"royal-geographical-society-with-ibg-annual-conference-session-urban-violence-in-troubled-cities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2019\/08\/28\/royal-geographical-society-with-ibg-annual-conference-session-urban-violence-in-troubled-cities\/","title":{"rendered":"Royal Geographical Society with IBG Annual Conference Session: &#8216;Urban Violence in Troubled Cities&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Royal Geographical Society with IBG Annual Conference session <a href=\"http:\/\/conference.rgs.org\/AC2019\/0d77b61d-cf21-499d-9ddc-c2808f30c5c1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Urban Violence in Troubled Cities \u2013 Towards Comparative Geographies of Hope<\/a>\u00a0is co-convened and chaired by Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/1914\/rock-rokem-jonathan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonathan Rock Rokem<\/a>, Lecturer in Human Geography.\u00a0\u00a0The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rgs.org\/events\/summer-2019\/rgs-ibg-annual-international-conference-2019-(27-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">conference<\/a> will take place in London between the 27th and 30<sup>th<\/sup> August and brings together over 1,800 participants from across the world to advance the discipline and work with many different audiences.<\/p>\n<p>The session brings together a selected group of international case studies from Bogota, Colombia, Johannesburg, South Africa, Dili, Timor-Leste, Jerusalem, Hebron and Beersheba in Israel\/Palestine, and rural and urban subnational contexts across sub-Saharan Africa engaging with spatial analysis and urban violence driven by geopolitical regional tensions.<\/p>\n<p>In doing so, the session seeks to start learning from and comparing across different cities, pointing to the growing need to re-think &#8216;labels&#8217; and &#8216;concepts&#8217; attributed to cities and neighbourhoods, to better conceptualise and adapt policy and practice to (e.g. ethnic, religious, or LGBTQ) minorities and exposed citizens and non-citizens (e.g. migrants, women, unemployed or homeless persons) in an ever more fractured urban geopolitical reality (Rokem and Boano 2018).
