{"id":3871,"date":"2019-06-21T16:32:30","date_gmt":"2019-06-21T16:32:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/?p=3871"},"modified":"2019-06-21T16:32:30","modified_gmt":"2019-06-21T16:32:30","slug":"dice-to-help-uk-woodland-with-glastonbury-festival-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2019\/06\/21\/dice-to-help-uk-woodland-with-glastonbury-festival-event\/","title":{"rendered":"DICE to help UK woodland with Glastonbury Festival event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Between 26th and 30th June, a Glastonbury Festival event involving conservationists from the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/dice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology<\/a> (DICE) will help contribute to the future of woodland in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Now in its fourth year, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.festivalbugs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sex &amp; Bugs &amp; Rock \u2018n Roll<\/a>\u00a0project highlights\u00a0scientific and environmental matters\u00a0to the\u00a0general public\u00a0at popular UK summer events and music festivals.<\/p>\n<p>This year the focus is\u00a0woodlands and climate change\u00a0and the project is designed to give visitors the opportunity to understand how climate change could affect woodlands and the animals that live there.<\/p>\n<p>One of the \u2018headline\u2019 events for the Glastonbury 2019 project is a\u00a0game that will help researchers find out why people love woodlands. They will be asking festival-goers to create their\u00a0ideal woodland\u00a0using a selection of\u00a0tree species, animals and woodland plants. Conservationists from\u00a0DICE,\u00a0including Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/475\/davies-zoe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zoe Davies<\/a> and Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/479\/fish-robert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Fish<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/lec\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lancaster Environment Centre<\/a>\u00a0will then evaluate the images to find out\u00a0which aspects of woodland diversity are important to people. For each person who plays the game,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wythamwoods.ox.ac.uk\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wytham Woods<\/a>\u00a0will\u00a0plant an acorn from an ancient oak tree\u00a0at Wytham Park near Oxford.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3873 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/files\/2019\/06\/woodland-game.jpg\" alt=\"Participants playing the 'Create your ideal woodland' game\" width=\"754\" height=\"503\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/files\/2019\/06\/woodland-game.jpg 754w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/files\/2019\/06\/woodland-game-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 754px) 100vw, 754px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sex &amp; Bugs &amp; Rock \u2018n Roll is led by the\u00a0University of Lancaster, with the universities of\u00a0Kent,\u00a0Oxford\u00a0and\u00a0Exeter, the\u00a0Met Office, the\u00a0New Phytologist Trust, the\u00a0Field Studies Council\u00a0and the\u00a0Forestry Commission\u00a0all supporting the initiative.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Davies, who has helped shape the event, said, &#8220;The Sex &amp; Bugs &amp; Rock \u2018n Roll tour is a\u00a0fantastic way to engage the public with major scientific issues\u00a0in a fun, informative and engaging manner in a great setting.
