{"id":3598,"date":"2019-03-27T14:45:58","date_gmt":"2019-03-27T14:45:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/?p=3598"},"modified":"2019-05-15T15:59:49","modified_gmt":"2019-05-15T15:59:49","slug":"call-for-papers-cities-against-nationalism-symposium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2019\/03\/27\/call-for-papers-cities-against-nationalism-symposium\/","title":{"rendered":"Call for Papers &#8211; Cities against Nationalism?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <em>Cities against Nationalism?<\/em>\u00a0is a one-day international symposium hosted by <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/kiss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kent Interdisciplinary Centre for Spatial Studies<\/a>\u00a0(KISS), in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/urbanlab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UCL Urban Lab<\/a>, on <strong>Tuesday, 18th June<\/strong> at the University of Kent.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium aims at investigating the relatively under-theorised research field of urban geopolitics and nationalism. Specifically, we will focus on experiences where cities and regions <em>oppose<\/em> nationalism \u2013 with particular reference to the relations between local urban conditions of minorities and immigrants in times of increased political uncertainty. This symposium will bring together scholars in the fields of human geography, political geography and urban studies.<\/p>\n<p>We invite papers that discuss and address (although are not limited to) the following broad topics:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To determine to what extent the current political transformations in cities worldwide offer us a platform to re-think urban citizenship and negotiation of difference.<\/li>\n<li>To explore how urban\/regional identity could unify citizens in opposition to a national identity.<\/li>\n<li>To investigate the extent to which new transformations of urban citizenship vary between and within regional and local contexts.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We welcome 250 word abstracts as proposals: please contact Dr <a href=\"mailto:j.rock@kent.ac.uk\">Jonathan Rock Rokem<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<strong>20th April 2019\u00a0<\/strong>to indicate your interest in participating in the symposium*.
