{"id":3573,"date":"2019-03-25T15:49:47","date_gmt":"2019-03-25T15:49:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/?p=3573"},"modified":"2019-03-27T11:56:20","modified_gmt":"2019-03-27T11:56:20","slug":"professor-deborah-james-to-deliver-talk-on-austerity-britain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2019\/03\/25\/professor-deborah-james-to-deliver-talk-on-austerity-britain\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Deborah James to deliver talk on austerity Britain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The School of Anthropology and Conservation is delighted to welcome Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lse.ac.uk\/anthropology\/people\/deborah-james\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deborah James<\/a> from the London School of Economics to speak as part of this term&#8217;s Social Anthropology Seminar Series.\u00a0She\u00a0will present a\u00a0paper entitled &#8216;Sorting out income: transnational house holding and austerity Britain&#8217;\u200b.<\/p>\n<p>The seminar will run between <strong>13:00<\/strong> and <strong>15:00<\/strong> on <strong>Tuesday 26th March<\/strong> in the Swingland room.<\/p>\n<p>Professor James is a specialist of South and Southern Africa and her work is broadly political and economic in focus. She has just completed an ESRC-funded project entitled &#8216;An ethnography of advice: between market, society and the declining welfare state&#8217;. It explores how, under conditions of continuing economic crisis, assumptions about the nature of society are being reshaped, particularly in respect of who receives assistance and who funds and arranges it. Where the \u2018usual\u2019 targets of welfare and benefits were the poor or destitute, they now include those who work but cannot make ends meet, and who experience increasing numbers of complex problems for which they need advice.
