{"id":3528,"date":"2019-03-12T17:27:17","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T17:27:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/?p=3528"},"modified":"2019-03-15T17:49:48","modified_gmt":"2019-03-15T17:49:48","slug":"inaugural-kiss-lecture-the-spaces-of-modern-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2019\/03\/12\/inaugural-kiss-lecture-the-spaces-of-modern-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Annual KISS Lecture 2019 &#8211; The Spaces of Modern War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the relationship between geography, politics and power in conflict zones continues to impact on world news, Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geog.ubc.ca\/persons\/derek-gregory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Derek Gregory<\/a> will deliver a free talk on modern war at the School.<\/p>\n<p>The talk by\u00a0Professor Gregory, of the\u00a0University of British Columbia, takes place on <strong>Thursday 14 March<\/strong> at <strong>18.00<\/strong> in the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/maps\/canterbury\/canterbury-campus\/building\/templeman-library\/tlt\">Templeman Lecture Theatre<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>on the Canterbury campus.<\/p>\n<p>The talk is part of the 2019\u00a0annual lecture\u00a0for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/kiss\/\">Kent Interdisciplinary Centre for Spatial Studies<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/kiss\/\">KISS<\/a>) based in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\">School of Anthropology and Conservation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Entitled\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/events\/event\/36805\/the-spaces-of-modern-war\">The Spaces of Modern War<\/a>,\u00a0the talk will address several factors that have become\u00a0common place in conflict zones across the world. This will include attempts to\u00a0remove people from the battlefield via technological innovations and drone warfare, the use of social media to\u00a0advance a \u2018post-truth\u2019 narrative\u00a0to what is perceived as military violence, and the role of the law in legitimising military violence.<\/p>\n<p>Examples will be drawn from the\u00a0First and Second World Wars, and from\u00a0contemporary conflicts\u00a0in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/anthropology-conservation\/people\/482\/groombridge-jim\">Jim Groombridge<\/a>, Head of School, said, &#8220;This is a\u00a0very exciting speaker\u00a0on a subject that will resonate with many as we follow news of conflicts around the world today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The talk has been organised as part of the School\u2019s new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/undergraduate\/2532\/human-geography\">BSc in Human Geography<\/a>\u00a0with the Human Ecology Research Theme and in partnership with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rgs.org\/\">Royal Geographic Society<\/a>.
