However, we know remarkably little about how these unique abilities evolved.\u00a0 The GRASP projects aims to understand how human hand morphology evolved by addressing two fundamental, yet unresolved, questions of human evolution:<\/p>\n<p><strong>(1) Did the earliest fossil humans (hominins) still use their hands to climb in trees?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>(2) When did forceful precision grip (and, by association, stone tool-use) evolve and which fossil hominin species were capable of this behaviour?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The GRASP project will address these questions using three complementary and interdisciplinary methods:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Analyses of internal structure of hand bones using high-resolution microtomography (microCT)<\/strong>.\u00a0 We analyse the internal bony structure \u2013 trabecular and cortical bone &#8211; of human, non-human ape and fossil hominin hand bones. The internal bony structure remodels throughout an individual\u2019s life to respond to stress and therefore can provide more clear insight into how a bone was used than analyses of external morphology alone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biomechanics of hand use in great apes and humans<\/strong><br \/>\nTo interpret the functional significance of variation in internal bony structure, the GRASP project will collect the necessary biomechanical data on:<\/p>\n<p><strong>(a)\u00a0<\/strong>the load (pressure) experienced by the human hand during tool-use and tool-making (with Dr Erin-Marie Williams and Dr Alastair Key)<br \/>\n<strong>(b)\u00a0<\/strong>hand use and hand postures used by African apes during locomotion (and non-locomotor behaviours) in the wild (PhD student Johanna Neufuss)<br \/>\n<strong>(c)\u00a0<\/strong>the loads experienced by the bonobo hand during arboreal locomotion (Dr Diana Samuel, in collaboration with Dr <a href=\"http:\/\/www.liv.ac.uk\/ageing-and-chronic-disease\/staff\/kris-daout\/\">Kristiaan D\u2019Ao\u00fbt<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Modelling and validation<\/strong><br \/>\nAll of the data gathered in the first two objectives will be used to create musculoskeletal models of the human and bonobo hand and high-resolution 3D biomechanical (finite-element) models to simulate natural loading of individual hand bones in humans, bonobos and, ultimately, fossil hominins (PhD student Alex Synek in collaboration with Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilsb.tuwien.ac.at\/~pahr\/\">Dieter Pahr<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With this detailed understanding of the how the living human and bonobo hand function, we aim to interpret the morphology of the\u00a0<em>Australopithecus sediba\u00a0<\/em>hand (two million year-old fossil hominin from Malapa, South Africa) and other hominin fossils to determine how early hominin locomotor and manipulative behaviours shaped the evolution of the human hand.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Principal Investigator:\tDr Tracy L Kivell<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":40284,"featured_media":3020,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[159347,142272],"tags":[588],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/231"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/40284"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=231"}],"version-history":[{"count":4,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/231\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":4022,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/231\/revisions\/4022"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/3020"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=231"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=231"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=231"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
