{"id":2274,"date":"2017-06-21T09:26:12","date_gmt":"2017-06-21T09:26:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/?p=2274"},"modified":"2018-07-24T14:41:02","modified_gmt":"2018-07-24T14:41:02","slug":"dr-jake-bicknell-receives-conservation-award-for-outstanding-student","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2017\/06\/21\/dr-jake-bicknell-receives-conservation-award-for-outstanding-student\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr Jake Bicknell receives Conservation award for Outstanding Student"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/our-work\/conservation\/centre-for-conservation-science\/news\/awards\/\" target=\"_blank\">Royal Society for the Protection of Birds&#8217; Conservation Science award<\/a> for an outstanding PhD student (2017) has been\u00a0presented to Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/sac\/staff-profiles\/profiles\/conservation-biology\/research-staff\/bicknell_jake.html\" target=\"_blank\">Jake Bicknell<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jake,\u00a0who works in the Durrell Institute of Conservation &amp; Ecology (DICE), will receive a specially commissioned medal and cash prize of \u00a3500.<\/p>\n<p>The RSPB prize is open to postgraduates who have been awarded a PhD in any area of conservation science at a UK university within the last two years. The PhD must be likely to make a significant contribution to the conservation of any species of animal or plant, communities or habitats anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Students who have conducted original and outstanding doctoral research in conservation science are nominated by their academic departments before the winner is chosen by the RSPB\u2019s team of scientists.<\/p>\n<p>Jake\u2019s PhD, entitled <em>Contemporary conservation in Guyana: the role of Reduced-Impact Logging and protected areas in a sustainable future,<\/em>\u00a0is about solutions towards conservation of the world\u2019s tropical forests.<\/p>\n<p>He is now continuing his research on tropical forests as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in DICE.<\/p>\n<p>The award was\u00a0presented at the RSPB\u2019s annual event, which this year was\u00a0held at the Cambridge Conservation Initiative\u2019s David Attenborough Building on 21st June.<\/p>\n<p>You can read Jake&#8217;s blog about receiving the award on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/community\/ourwork\/b\/biodiversity\/archive\/2017\/06\/21\/research-on-tropical-forests-and-solutions-towards-their-conservation-wins-rspb-conservation-science-award-for-an-outstanding-phd.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">RSPB website<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds&#8217; Conservation Science award for an outstanding PhD student (2017) has been\u00a0presented to Dr Jake Bicknell.
