{"id":2227,"date":"2017-06-07T11:54:38","date_gmt":"2017-06-07T11:54:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/?p=2227"},"modified":"2017-06-07T11:54:38","modified_gmt":"2017-06-07T11:54:38","slug":"ruth-augers-homelessness-research-wins-400-funding-after-public-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sac-news-events\/2017\/06\/07\/ruth-augers-homelessness-research-wins-400-funding-after-public-vote\/","title":{"rendered":"Ruth Auger&#8217;s homelessness research wins \u00a3400 funding after public vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Postgraduate student <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/sac\/current-students\/research-students\/anthropology\/a-e\/augur_ruth.html\" target=\"_blank\">Ruth Auger<\/a> won the inaugural Graduate School Public Engagement competition on 1st June, after being voted for by members of the public.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth\u2019s project is focused on trying to improve the lives of homeless people in Canterbury by creating a communal gardening project at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catchinglives.org\/\">Catching Lives day centre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Her talk explained that the funding would have a direct benefit by making it possible to purchase materials that can be used to improve and maintain the day centre\u2019s garden, offering residents the chance to get involved in a socially-inclusive activity.<\/p>\n<p>Other pitches at the event ranged from building brain-controlled wheelchairs to help give more independence to paralysed individuals through to creating a theatre performance for autistic children to help promote their own creativity and individuality.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0event was held at La Trappiste in Canterbury on 1 June with members of the public, who were invited to attend the event free of charge, and with tea, coffee and cake on offer.<\/p>\n<p>Of those who attended, 96% said the event had helped provide an improved understanding of the potential practical applications of university research.<\/p>\n<p>The \u00a3400 prize was donated by the Graduate School at the University of Kent and the event was organised by postgraduate student <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/sac\/current-students\/research-students\/dice\/p-t\/thomas-walters_laura.html\" target=\"_blank\">Laura Thomas-Walters<\/a>\u00a0(<em>pictured left<\/em>), who studies at DICE.
