Her innovative research combines ethnobotany and genomics to help us to understand the largely unwritten migration history of people, plants and the knowledge on how to use them. She received her PhD in Ethnobotany at the National Herbarium of the Netherlands at Utrecht University in 2000, for her research on <em>Medicinal and ritual plant use among Suriname Maroons and their ancestral ethnic groups in Ghana, Benin and Gabon<\/em>.
