Joe Broomfield, a student on the MSc in Evolution and Human Behaviour programme, decided to enter a team consisting of his peers into the recent University of Kent 10k run. A keen runner, the organiser’s offer of a free massage for every runner sealed the deal for him. Plus, it provided a good opportunity for students across the taught programmes to get to know each other and, at the very least, encourage some to exercise more. He managed to recruit a team of six comprising of himself, fellow human behaviourist Mike Smetana, and Jess Stewart, Tracy Peyman, Andrea Moshier and Danni Thompson on conservation programmes.
Tracy hates running just for the sake of it so wanted to set a goal for motivation, Andrea took part in a bid to “stave off laziness” and to check out the running scene in the UK, whilst Danni and Jess wanted to attempt a 10k for the first time.
It was a successful run in that everybody finished well, with a few of the team managing personal bests, but unsuccessful in that Joe didn’t get his free massage. Each garnering a medal for their participation, Joe hopes that this becomes a tradition that each new postgraduate cohort continues.
