After such a successful inaugural event, BioBlitz is back for 2022!!

BioBlitz is an interactive event, held to record as many living species as possible within a specific area, under a short amount of time. This data is created through collecting many biological surveys carried out by scientists, the public and volunteers, providing an excellent opportunity to get the local community involved with conservation. And of course, our campus is the perfect location.

On Saturday 11th June 2022, the School of Anthropology and Conservation are hosting a BioBlitz event on campus. Please join our experts on surveys, browse the stalls, watch presentations on conservation projects and take part in the workshops at the BioBlitz 2022.

What is a Bio Blitz?

BioBlitz is an intensive day of surveying the biodiversity on the University of Kent’s campus and is a student-led initiative to engage the public. This is a FREE event, and everyone is welcome! We are hoping for a lot of attendees from students, scientists, staff, teachers, families and local residents.

“I attended the University of Kent’s first BioBlitz in 2021, and I had a fantastic time and spent the day joining experts on a survey learning about a variety of species, from plants to birds. It is a great opportunity to gain survey skills, learn about British species, and spend time outdoors.” Faye Whiley, PhD student Biodiversity management

What happens on the day?

There are a range of activities planned throughout the day! We are carrying out interactive biodiversity surveys and activities.

There are three interactive family-friendly workshops  – a bug trail, create a bug hotel and a composting workshop. As well as Face painting (from 10 – 12) and Pond dipping (from 12 – 4) and a range of stalls outside the Marlowe building and including The Kent Moth Group / Butterfly conservation, RSPB and Kent Wildlife Trust, field identification skills and arts and crafts.

What is the data used for?

The total number of species will be counted at the end of the day, and we can see how this compares to last year. Last year 244 species were identified on campus!
