Emma Raducanu

Dr Martha Newson was asked on BBC Sounds news and current affairs programme if eighteen-year-olds today are different and a sign of change to what they can achieve?

Winner of the US Open, eighteen-year-old Emma Raducanu made tennis history when she won the US Open Women’s Final on Saturday 11 September but are current eighteen-year old’s more talented and more resilient than those who came previously?

Discussing Emma Raducanu’s success and teenage resilience Dr Martha Newson was asked if eighteen-year-olds today are any different and a sign of change to what teenagers can achieve?

“It is tempting to say we live in a different world, and although we do, the magnitude of change in the last 25 years is not as much as we might think, rather our perception of the world around us which influence our stressors and motivation to change. So fundamentally we are not any different to the younger generation.” Dr Newson continued, on the resilience, we have seen demonstrated by Emma

“She is multilingual, academically able, all these wonderful traits, part of her success has to be due to resilience, being able to process her losses and failures. She said she is keen to experience better than herself.”
