{"id":65,"date":"2016-10-19T00:09:00","date_gmt":"2016-10-18T23:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/?p=65"},"modified":"2016-11-04T11:25:11","modified_gmt":"2016-11-04T11:25:11","slug":"adams-albert-1876-1917","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/2016\/10\/19\/adams-albert-1876-1917\/","title":{"rendered":"Adams, Albert (1876-1917)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Private Albert Adams was born in Rochester on 18 September 1876.\u00a0 Albert first served in the Royal Engineers, enlisting on 26 February 1917, and transferring to the 6<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment on 9 September, with his service number being 40416.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of the 1881 Census, Albert\u2019s family lived at 20 Morden Street, Rochester.\u00a0 William Adams, Albert\u2019s father, was then working as a steward.\u00a0 Alice Adams, Albert\u2019s mother, had no occupation listed. \u00a0\u00a0In the 1881 Census, Albert had two older brothers, William T. and Frederick (then 9 and 6 to Albert\u2019s 4) and two younger sisters, Louisa and Alice M.\u00a0 By the time of the 1891 Census, William was listed as a mariner, and he had married again after the death of Albert\u2019s mother in 1888.\u00a0 Alice was buried in St Margaret\u2019s Churchyard. \u00a0Around this time, Albert was a scholar at Troy Town School in Rochester. \u00a0By 1891, he had acquired a step-mother, Caroline, two half-sisters \u2013 Nellie and Frances \u2013 and a step-brother, Henry White, who was the same age as Albert\u2019s sister, Alice.\u00a0 At this point, the family lived at 13 Rose Street.\u00a0 Albert and Frederick were working as telegraph messengers, whilst William T. had apparently left home and was living in in Snodland, working as a carpenter.\u00a0 William Adams was now listed as a mariner.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of the 1901 Census, newly-weds Albert and Ada Caroline Adams were living at 35 Rochester Avenue, where they were the sole occupants of the property.\u00a0 Albert was a shipbuilder\u2019s clerk, and Ada\u2019s occupation was not given.\u00a0 By the time of the 1911 Census, the couple were living in Fisher Street, Sandwich, with their son.\u00a0 Albert worked as a licensed victualler, supported by Ada in this work.\u00a0 Their son, Albert Sidney (or Edney) Adams, was 2 and had been born in Sandwich on 24 December 1908.\u00a0 De Ruvigny\u2019s Roll of Honour states that, before his death, Albert was the licensee of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dover-kent.com\/2014-project-a\/Globe-and-Laurel-Gillingham.html\">Globe and Laurel pub<\/a> in Gillingham, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kenthistoryforum.co.uk\/index.php?topic=8534.0\">at 105 Britton Street<\/a>.\u00a0 As Albert is listed in De Ruvigny\u2019s Roll, he was presumably a reservist before the war.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/files\/2016\/10\/Albert-Adams.jpg\" alt=\"albert-adams\" width=\"248\" height=\"291\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Albert died on 2 October 1917, in action on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ww1battlefields.co.uk\/flanders\/poelcapelle.html\">Poelcappelle Road<\/a>, and is commemorated at the Tyne Cot Memorial, in West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.\u00a0 Albert was married to Ada Caroline Adams (nee Lower), and at the time of his death, she was living at 126 Britton Street, Gillingham.\u00a0 Albert\u2019s father, William, had by this point moved to Erith. \u00a0Albert&#8217;s page on Every Man Remembered can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.everymanremembered.org\/profiles\/soldier\/845658\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sources:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Census 1881: Class:\u00a0<em>RG11<\/em>; Piece:\u00a0<em>886<\/em>; Folio:\u00a0<em>33<\/em>; Page:\u00a0<em>44<\/em>; GSU roll:\u00a0<em>1341210<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ancestry.com and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.\u00a0<em>1881 England Census<\/em>\u00a0[database on-line].
