{"id":54,"date":"2016-10-14T15:38:59","date_gmt":"2016-10-14T14:38:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/?p=54"},"modified":"2016-10-14T16:03:17","modified_gmt":"2016-10-14T15:03:17","slug":"moorey-jesse-c-1894-1915","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/2016\/10\/14\/moorey-jesse-c-1894-1915\/","title":{"rendered":"Moorey, Jesse (c.1894-1915)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jesse Moorey was one of two brothers who served and died for the King&#8217;s Royal Rifle Corps &#8211; the other was <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/2016\/10\/14\/moorey-henry-1890-1915\/\">Henry Moorey<\/a>. \u00a0More of the Moorey family background can be found in Henry&#8217;s biographical entry.<\/p>\n<p>Jesse Moorey enlisted for the 1<sup>st<\/sup> Battalion of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.1914-1918.net\/krrc.htm\">King\u2019s Royal Rifle Corps<\/a> (KRRC) as a Rifleman on 15 May 1915, when he was 21 years old. His older brother, Henry Moorey, had joined the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Battalion of the KRRC, and died of his wounds in January 2015. \u00a0Up to this point, Moorey had been working as a general labourer. His service number was R\/12896<\/p>\n<p>At a medical examination around the time of his enlistment, Jesse was 21 years and 5 months old when he enlisted, and he was 5 foot 10.5 inches tall.\u00a0 Jesse had married Bertha Banks on 4 July 1915 in Strood; presumably just before he was shipped to France with the Rifles.\u00a0 Bertha was from Snodland, further south down the Medway Valley on its western side, and in 1911, was working in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.victoriacountyhistory.ac.uk\/explore\/items\/snodland-paper-mill\">local paper mill<\/a>.\u00a0 Tragically, the Mooreys\u2019 marriage would barely last a month before Jesse was involved in the Battle of the Somme.\u00a0 He listed as missing on 27 July 1916.\u00a0 Moorey was one of the 73,367 soldiers who died during this Battle, and he has no known grave.\u00a0 His name is on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.everymanremembered.org\/profiles\/soldier\/1545585\/\">Thiepval Memorial<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After the war, Bertha would marry Frederick A.
