{"id":38,"date":"2016-10-07T10:12:03","date_gmt":"2016-10-07T09:12:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/?p=38"},"modified":"2016-10-07T10:12:03","modified_gmt":"2016-10-07T09:12:03","slug":"phillips-joseph-1892-1915","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/2016\/10\/07\/phillips-joseph-1892-1915\/","title":{"rendered":"Phillips, Joseph (1892-1915)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Joseph (Joe) Phillips was born in Strood in the early months of 1892.\u00a0 According to the 1901 census, his father, William was a brickfield labourer who was born forty years earlier in Hoo, while his mother, Rose Ann, came from Rainham.\u00a0 In 1901 the family lived at 87, Cuxton Road, Strood.\u00a0 Joe had an elder sister, two older brothers, and a younger sister and brother (c\/f George Phillips).<\/p>\n<p>By the time of the 1911 Census Joe had left home.\u00a0 It seems that Joe had been in the regular army for some time before the outbreak of war: it is highly likely that he was the \u2018Joseph Phillips\u2019 recorded on census night at the Badajos army barracks in Aldershot (although there are slight discrepancies in both his place of birth \u2013 recorded as Chatham \u2013 and his age, which was given as twenty rather than nineteen).\u00a0 In 1911 Badajos was an infantry barracks, housing the 1<sup>st<\/sup> battalion of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nam.ac.uk\/research\/famous-units\/royal-hampshire-regiment\">Hampshire Regiment<\/a> and named after an 1812 Peninsular War battle in which forces under Sir Arthur Wellesley (later the Duke of Wellington) had triumphed over Britain\u2019s Napoleonic foes.\u00a0 Built in the late 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, it was a red-brick barracks, probably similar to the naval buildings at Brompton in Gillingham, and was one of several at Aldershot named after Wellington\u2019s victories.\u00a0 [Film of the Aldershot barracks shot before its demolition can be viewed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DYedFv-KG80\">here<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-39 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/files\/2016\/10\/Aldershot-300x157.png\" alt=\"Still from film about Aldershot Barracks\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/files\/2016\/10\/Aldershot-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/files\/2016\/10\/Aldershot-768x401.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/files\/2016\/10\/Aldershot.png 856w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sign pointing to the location of the Badajos Barracks at Aldershot.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At some stage Joe must have moved to the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> battalion of the Hampshires.\u00a0 At the outbreak of the Great War in August 1914 they were stationed at Mhow in the Madhya Pradesh region of India.\u00a0 Along with other regular army units scattered across the British Empire, Joe\u2019s battalion was soon recalled from India to join the 88<sup>th<\/sup> brigade of the of the 29<sup>th<\/sup> army division.\u00a0 Once back in Britain, they were stationed at Stratford-on-Avon and Warwick, before embarking at Avonmouth to sail to Egypt in late March 1915.\u00a0 From Egypt they sailed onward to Cape Helles on the Gallipoli peninsula.\u00a0 The battalion arrived on 25<sup>th<\/sup> April 1915 and tragically Joe lost his life the very next day.<\/p>\n<p>Joe\u2019s page on the Every Man Remembered website is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.everymanremembered.org\/profiles\/soldier\/686931\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ancestry.com sources:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Census 1910: Class:\u00a0<em>RG13<\/em>; Piece:\u00a0<em>720<\/em>; Folio:\u00a0<em>129<\/em>; Page:\u00a0<em>8<\/em><\/p>\n<p>1911 Census:\u00a0 Class:\u00a0<em>RG14<\/em>; Piece:\u00a0<em>3123<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ancestry.com.\u00a0 [database on-line]. \u00a0\u00a0Original data:\u00a0<em>Census Returns of England and Wales, 1911<\/em>.
