{"id":31,"date":"2016-09-01T10:36:33","date_gmt":"2016-09-01T09:36:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/?p=31"},"modified":"2016-09-01T10:36:33","modified_gmt":"2016-09-01T09:36:33","slug":"abbotson-sidney-1889-1918","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/2016\/09\/01\/abbotson-sidney-1889-1918\/","title":{"rendered":"Abbotson, Sidney (1889-1918)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sidney Abbotson was born in 1889 in Strood, which was then part of the city of Rochester.\u00a0 He spent much of his childhood at 84 Temple Street in Strood.\u00a0 In 1909, he married Esther Missen, and they had two children, Kate and Sidney, who were 2 years old and 7 months old at the time of the 1911 Census.\u00a0 The Abbotsons appear to still have been living in Strood in 1911, possibly lodging with Sidney\u2019s older sister, Harriet.\u00a0 In 1911, Sidney was working as an engineering labourer.<\/p>\n<p>During the First World War, Sidney joined the Royal Engineers as a Sapper \u2013 Sappers were soldiers whose role involved building and maintaining key military infrastructure, like roads, bridges, wireless communications, and railways.\u00a0 Sidney served with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.1914-1918.net\/lightrail.htm\">27<sup>th<\/sup> Light Railway Company of the Royal Engineers<\/a>.\u00a0 Sidney died shortly before the Armistice, on 30 October 1918, in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.1914-1918.net\/hospitals.htm\">7<sup>th<\/sup> Canadian General Hospital<\/a>, which was then in Boulogne in Northern France.
