{"id":169,"date":"2016-11-25T20:13:31","date_gmt":"2016-11-25T20:13:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/?p=169"},"modified":"2016-11-25T20:13:31","modified_gmt":"2016-11-25T20:13:31","slug":"dyer-ernest-henry-1894-1916","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/2016\/11\/25\/dyer-ernest-henry-1894-1916\/","title":{"rendered":"Dyer, Ernest Henry (1894-1916)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ernest Dyer was born in Rochester in the third quarter of 1894.<\/p>\n<p>He was recorded in the 1901 census as living at 4 Garden Place, Rochester.\u00a0 He lived with his parents, both aged 52, an 18-year old brother, and four sisters.\u00a0 Ernest was six years old and the family was completed by another boy, aged three.\u00a0 Ernest\u2019s father, George and his older brother both worked as oil mill labourers and one of his sisters was a domestic servant.\u00a0 Ernest\u2019s mother was called Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>In 1911 Ernest lived with his widowed mother (whose age was given as 60 and occupation as nurse). Ernest\u2019s age was given as 17 (although he was 16 at the time) and his occupation as \u2018refinery labourer\u2019, which was very probably the same occupation that his late father had had.\u00a0 They lived at 59 John Street, Rochester and a grandson of Sarah\u2019s, as well as Ernest\u2019s younger brother, were both living with them.<\/p>\n<p>Ernest enlisted with the Royal West Kent regiment and held the rank of private.\u00a0 His service number was G\/4596.\u00a0 He was killed soon after the start of the Battle of the Somme and his body was not recovered.\u00a0 He is remembered on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cwgc.org\/find-a-cemetery\/cemetery\/80800\/THIEPVAL%20MEMORIAL\">Thiepval Memorial<\/a> as the son of Mrs Sarah A.
