{"id":146,"date":"2016-11-18T14:38:06","date_gmt":"2016-11-18T14:38:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/?p=146"},"modified":"2016-11-18T14:38:50","modified_gmt":"2016-11-18T14:38:50","slug":"bowes-victor-harold-1893-1915","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/2016\/11\/18\/bowes-victor-harold-1893-1915\/","title":{"rendered":"Bowes, Victor Harold (1893-1915)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bowes, Victor Harold (1893-1915)<\/p>\n<p>[For family background, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/2016\/11\/18\/bowes-reginald-leonard-ronald-1895-1917\/\">see Bowes, Reginald<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Victor Bowes was born in Chatham on 18 January 1893.\u00a0 He followed his father into the regular army and at the time of the 1911 census he was aged 18 and was a private in the Army Ordnance Corps (AOC or armourers).\u00a0 He was staying in a widow\u2019s boarding house at Enfield Lock, which must have been a billet, as four other soldiers of the same rank and age as Victor were staying there also.\u00a0 The Royal Small Arms Factory was in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Enfield_Lock\">Enfield Lock<\/a>.\u00a0 AOC recruits were tasked with repairing and maintaining arms and munitions.<\/p>\n<p>By the time of his death aged 22 Victor was a staff sergeant in the AOC.\u00a0 He was attached to the 8<sup>th<\/sup> battalion of the Royal Scots.\u00a0 His death is commemorated on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cwgc.org\/find-a-cemetery\/cemetery\/85800\/LE%20TOURET%20MEMORIAL\">Le Touret<\/a> memorial for soldiers who have no known grave, which is in the Pas de Calais region of France.\u00a0 The date of Victor\u2019s death \u2013 10 March 1915 \u2013 and location of the memorial suggest that he died in the Battle of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longlongtrail.co.uk\/battles\/battles-of-the-western-front-in-france-and-flanders\/the-battle-of-neuve-chapelle\/\">Neuve Chapelle<\/a>.\u00a0 His service number was A\/1236.
