{"id":105,"date":"2016-11-05T16:59:14","date_gmt":"2016-11-05T16:59:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/?p=105"},"modified":"2016-11-05T16:59:14","modified_gmt":"2016-11-05T16:59:14","slug":"akhurst-arthur-humphrey-1896-1917","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/2016\/11\/05\/akhurst-arthur-humphrey-1896-1917\/","title":{"rendered":"Akhurst, Arthur Humphrey (1896-1917)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Arthur was born in Sevenoaks in 1896.\u00a0 By the time of the 1911 Census, Arthur was going by his middle name of Humphrey, and had moved with his mother to Strood.\u00a0 His mother, Susan, had married Humphrey\u2019s stepfather, Christopher George Chambers, around 1904, and Humphrey had a younger sister, Doris Gwendoline, who was 4 in 1911.\u00a0 His stepfather worked as a waterside labourer, whilst Humphrey, then aged 15, was working as a core maker in a local iron foundry.\u00a0 The iron foundry was probably <a href=\"http:\/\/www.medway.gov.uk\/leisurecultureandsport\/localhistoryandarchives\/museums\/guildhallmuseum\/lostindustries\/avelingandporter.aspx\">Aveling and Porter<\/a>, as the <a href=\"http:\/\/foma-lsc.org\/wwi\/detail.php?Entry=21\">De Caville Index indicates that Humphrey is listed on the firm\u2019s roll of honour<\/a>.\u00a0 Susan\u2019s occupation was not listed.\u00a0 The family\u2019s address was given as High View, Moore Street, Strood.\u00a0 His mother was still living there in the years immediately after Humphrey\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>Susannah died in 1930 at the age of 61, in Strood.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur enlisted in Chatham, and began his service as a Private in the Royal West Surrey Regiment, between 4 and 21 November 1916 (regimental number 16036), transferring to the London <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forces-war-records.co.uk\/units\/4852\/royal-fusiliers-london-regiment\/\">London Regiment of the 22<sup>nd<\/sup> Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers<\/a> (regimental number 61526).<\/p>\n<p>Arthur died on 23 February 1917, and is buried in the St Sever Cemetery (Extension Part II UK A-D).\u00a0 His page on Every Man Remembered can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.everymanremembered.org\/profiles\/soldier\/515540\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sources:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1911 Census: Class:\u00a0<em>RG14<\/em>; Piece:\u00a0<em>3869<\/em>; Schedule Number:\u00a0<em>239<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ancestry.com.\u00a0<em>1911 England Census<\/em>\u00a0[database on-line].
