{"id":100,"date":"2016-11-04T18:25:03","date_gmt":"2016-11-04T18:25:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/?p=100"},"modified":"2016-11-04T18:25:03","modified_gmt":"2016-11-04T18:25:03","slug":"packman-thomas-alfred-tom-1895-1916","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/rochesterborstalfirstworldwar\/2016\/11\/04\/packman-thomas-alfred-tom-1895-1916\/","title":{"rendered":"Packman, Thomas Alfred (Tom) (1895-1916)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lieutenant Thomas Alfred Packman (Tom) was born in Strood in 18<sup>th<\/sup> May 1895 and was killed in action at Vermelles, near Lens, in France on 9<sup>th<\/sup> September 1916, aged 21.<\/p>\n<p>Tom\u2019s parents were Alfred Charles Augustus Packman, originally from Sheffield, and his wife, Eliza, who was born in India.\u00a0 Alfred senior was a medical doctor and a Justice of the Peace for the City of Rochester.\u00a0 His wife was a Poor Law Guardian and keen, active supporter of women\u2019s suffrage.\u00a0 In 1901 the family lived at 105 London Road, Strood, and Tom, who was born in Strood, had one older and one younger brother.\u00a0 By 1911 they had moved to 54 Maidstone Road, Rochester, but the eldest son, Arthur, had died.\u00a0 At both addresses the family had two live-in servants, a housemaid and a cook.\u00a0 The family undoubtedly were well-known in the area: Alfred\u2019s medical practice and civic work brought him into close contact with the poor of Rochester and Strood while his wife campaigned for better poor relief for widows as well as agitating for votes for women.<\/p>\n<p>Tom attended Sir Joseph Williamson\u2019s Mathematical School in Rochester and is on the School\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.roll-of-honour.com\/Kent\/RochesterMathematicalSchool.html\">Roll of Honour<\/a>.\u00a0 Later, he studied engineering in London. \u00a0According to an obituary in the <em>Kent Messenger<\/em>, he was on a motoring holiday in France when war broke out in 1914.\u00a0 He immediately returned to England and took a commission in the Royal Horse Artillery and began active service in early November 1914 at the age of 19.\u00a0 The newspaper reported that he had \u2018latterly been engaged with trench mortars, and had been in the thickest of the fighting\u2019.\u00a0 He was attached to the 7<sup>th<\/sup>\/8<sup>th<\/sup> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longlongtrail.co.uk\/the-british-trench-mortar-batteries-in-the-first-world-war\/\">Trench Mortar<\/a> Battery of the Royal Field Artillery.\u00a0 According to the University of London Officer Training Corps \u2018Roll of the Fallen\u2019, he was killed by a sniper while he was on observation work in command of a battery.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Kent Messenger<\/em> said that Tom was \u2018well known in Rochester and the sympathy of all classes goes out to Dr and Mrs Packman\u2019.\u00a0 Probate was granted to Tom\u2019s father in 1919 on an estate worth \u00a3633 14s 6d and Tom is buried in the Vermelles Commonwealth Cemetery in France.\u00a0 His page on \u2018Every Man Remembered\u2019 can be viewed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.everymanremembered.org\/profiles\/soldier\/252251\/\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ancestry.com Sources:<\/p>\n<p><em>England &amp; Wales, Civil Registration Birth Index, 1837-1915<\/em>\u00a0[database on-line], 2006.<\/p>\n<p><em>1901 England Census<\/em>\u00a0[database on-line] Class:\u00a0<em>RG13<\/em>; Piece:\u00a0<em>721<\/em>; Folio:\u00a0<em>13<\/em>; Page:\u00a0<em>17<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>1911 England Census<\/em>\u00a0[database on-line] Class:\u00a0<em>RG14<\/em>; Piece:\u00a0<em>3887<\/em>; Schedule Number:\u00a0<em>37<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>England &amp; Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966, 1973-1995<\/em>\u00a0[database on-line].<\/p>\n<p><em>University of London Officers Training Corps Roll of War Service 1914\u20131919<\/em>.
