{"id":1513,"date":"2022-06-16T16:37:24","date_gmt":"2022-06-16T15:37:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/ris\/?p=1513"},"modified":"2025-05-19T16:38:43","modified_gmt":"2025-05-19T15:38:43","slug":"getting-the-best-out-of-kent-cherries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/ris\/2022\/06\/16\/getting-the-best-out-of-kent-cherries\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting the best out of Kent cherries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/biosciences\">School of Biosciences<\/a>\u00a0have been awarded funding of over \u00a3300, 000 from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/\">UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)\u00a0<\/a>to develop a new approach to using fruit waste to create new healthy foods, while reducing food waste and carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<p>Through the \u2018Upcycled Food: Getting the Goodness out of Kent Cherries\u2019 project,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/biosciences\/people\/2081\/ezcurra-marina\">Dr Marina Ezcurra<\/a>\u202fand\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/biosciences\/people\/1027\/tullet-jennifer\">Dr Jenny Tullet<\/a>\u00a0will collaborate with Michael Dallaway, owner of Kent cherry grower\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rentacherrytree.co.uk\/\">Rent a cherry tree<\/a>, to determine the health benefits of a variety of Kent cherry products and develop new foods from cherry waste.<\/p>\n<p>As cherries are primarily sold as high-class fresh fruit, those that are bruised, soft or discoloured are often deemed unfit to sell by supermarkets. The project aims to reduce \u2018waste cherries\u2019 which are currently sent to landfill, negatively impacting productivity, carbon emissions and sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>With Kent being the largest cherry producer in the UK, this project will lead the way in creating a more sustainable and innovative cherry industry. It will provide Michael and other local growers with strong scientific knowledge on their products, helping local businesses capitalise on a growing consumer demand for healthy and sustainable products. Findings from the project will provide a major opportunity for local growers to expand by targeting a wider customer-base.<\/p>\n<p>This funding success is part of Kent\u2019s wider focus on addressing real-world challenges\u00a0and finding solutions to the urgent environmental issues facing the world today through the\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/signature-research-themes\/positive-environmental-futures\/\" href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/signature-research-themes\/positive-environmental-futures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Positive Environmental Futures<\/a>\u00a0Signature Research Theme. This\u00a0innovative, creative and inclusive community is\u00a0designed to be responsive to environmental challenges and pro-active in its use of collaborative knowledge to affect positive change.<\/p>\n<p>Rent a cherry tree is a Growing Kent &amp; Medway business partner, and has received support from the Growing Kent &amp; Medway team to apply for this funding.
