{"id":1233,"date":"2024-01-17T09:32:02","date_gmt":"2024-01-17T09:32:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/ris\/?p=1233"},"modified":"2025-05-19T12:43:45","modified_gmt":"2025-05-19T11:43:45","slug":"world-leading-researchers-at-kent-to-drive-radical-shift-in-conservation-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/ris\/2024\/01\/17\/world-leading-researchers-at-kent-to-drive-radical-shift-in-conservation-science\/","title":{"rendered":"World-leading researchers at Kent to drive radical shift in conservation science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kent has won a prestigious Research England grant, worth \u00a38.3 million, which will enable the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/dice\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Durrell Institute of Conservation Ecology (DICE)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to answer urgent environmental questions of international importance.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The five-year project titled\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sharing Space for Nature: enhancing the role of conservation areas in tackling current environmental crises<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is designed so that the world-leading DICE team can tackle three of the most important issues in conservation science; rewilding, the development of nature recovery networks and the role of community-managed conservation areas in global conservation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The project comes from the realisation that we need a radical shift in how we imagine, design and implement successful and inclusive conservation solutions at the landscape and seascape level.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/what-we-do\/browse-our-areas-of-investment-and-support\/expanding-excellence-in-england-e3-fund\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Enabling Excellence in England (E3)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0grant will let DICE recruit 15 new posts, including three lectureships, over the next five years. Led by Professor Bob Smith, Director of DICE, the team will build on existing local, national and international partnerships to explore three strands of research.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In collaboration with\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kentwildlifetrust.org.uk\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kent Wildlife Trust<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canterbury.gov.uk\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Canterbury County Council<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildwoodtrust.org\/conservation-and-rewilding\/conservation-projects\/blean-bison-project\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Wilder Blean Initiative<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the project will deliver the first interdisciplinary research programme in England on new rewilding projects. This will help restore nature, increase human well-being, support the local economy and link terrestrial and marine conservation areas.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A second strand will see DICE work with the South East Nature Partnership,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/natural-england\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Natural England<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/department-for-environment-food-rural-affairs\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Defra<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to develop the UK\u2019s first Community of Practice on designing conservation area networks in England using systematic conservation planning. A third strand will develop a global-level, interdisciplinary research programme on new types of community-managed conservation areas. For this, the team will work in collaboration with the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep-wcmc.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and a number of government, non-governmental organisations and academic partners from ten countries including Cameroon, England, Guyana, Indonesia, Mozambique and Nepal.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Shane Weller, DVC of Research and Innovation, said: \u2018I am absolutely delighted at this major success for the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology. Their work breaks down silos between the natural and social sciences and goes beyond to address complex real-world conservation challenges.
