{"id":1196,"date":"2023-11-16T15:42:15","date_gmt":"2023-11-16T15:42:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/ris\/?p=1196"},"modified":"2025-05-19T12:44:17","modified_gmt":"2025-05-19T11:44:17","slug":"kent-researchers-recognised-as-being-in-the-top-1-by-citations-in-their-field","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/ris\/2023\/11\/16\/kent-researchers-recognised-as-being-in-the-top-1-by-citations-in-their-field\/","title":{"rendered":"Kent researchers recognised as being in the top 1% by citations in their field"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers from across three Kent Schools have been included in the prestigious Clarivate list of <a href=\"https:\/\/clarivate.com\/highly-cited-researchers\/?action=clv_hcr_members_filter&amp;clv-paged=1&amp;clv-category=&amp;clv-institution=University%20of%20Kent&amp;clv-region=&amp;clv-name=&amp;utm_medium=press&amp;utm_source=blog\">Highly Cited Researchers 2023<\/a>, recognising their significant and broad influence in their fields of research.<\/p>\n<p>The four Kent researchers included in the list are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/kent-business-school\/people\/senior-leadership-team\/892\/papadopoulos-thanos\"> Professor Thanos Papadopoulos<\/a>, Professor of Management (Information Systems\/Operations Management) and Head of the Department of Analytics, Operations and Systems in Kent Business School<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/psychology\/people\/221\/douglas-karen\">Professor Karen Douglas<\/a>, <span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Professor of Social Psychology in the School of Psychology and specialist in conspiracy theories<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/msp.ac.uk\/person\/emma-veale\/\">Dr Emma Veale<\/a>, <span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Senior Research Associate at Medway School of Pharmacy known for her study of mammalian ion channels in neurons<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/msp.ac.uk\/person\/alistair-mathie\/\">Professor Alistair Mathie<\/a>, <span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Honorary Professor of Pharmacology and Cell Biology at<\/span> <span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Medway School of Pharmacy with expertise in \u201cbioelectricity\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A high number of citations indicates that a researcher&#8217;s publication has been read and referenced widely by other people. The more citations, the more widely a piece of research is disseminated throughout society, and the greater its impact. Each researcher selected for the list has authored multiple <em>Highly Cited Papers<\/em> which rank in the top 1% by citations for their field(s) and publication year in the <em>Web of Science<\/em> over the past decade. Of the world\u2019s population of scientists and social scientists, <em>Highly Cited Researchers<\/em> are 1 in 1,000.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/news\/kentlife\/31490\/kent-celebrates-outstanding-ref-2021-results\">outstanding Research Excellence Framework 2021 results<\/a> confirmed Kent as a leading research university, with the majority of our submissions rated as world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*).
