The  majority of these images were taken between 1972-4 during a series of excavations on the Orkney Islands. Each hardcopy folder of images was accompanied by an index catalogue which was also scanned. The images were then scanned and allocated a filename based on the numbers either recorded on the negatives or on the back of the positives. The filenames take the form of the year the photograph was taken, a code allocated by Renfrew and a number based on the chronological sequence in which the photograph was taken, for example [year]73[code] NB[first photograph in code sequence]

There are also photographs that appear to have been taken during various trips from locations around the world (possibly as part of Renfrew’s anthropological work).
