And what a busy weekend it was!

Sadly the Saturday was terrible weather with lots of rain and soggy feet but that didn’t dampen our spirits (sorry terrible pun there!), each year I am so pleased with the amount of students and their families that come over to talk to us about #recycling on campus. I know a lot of students might not be interested in the subject but it’s so important that we #recycle as much as we can and that we follow the waste guidance correctly. More information is available here.

Our allure of awesome freebies always helps with this year us handing out pencils made of recycled newspaper, pens out of recycled plastic, hard hat keyring bottle openers from recycled plastic and our good old favourite’s coasters, tri-merangs and a new one for this year personal keyring Gumdrop bins made out of recycled chewing gum. Yes you read that correctly made out of recycled chewing gum! You would be surprised what cool stuff can be made from chewing gum like guitar picks, bananas boxes, door stops, reusable take away mugs and the coolest thing in my opinion wellies! Our #gumdroponthego gave students the chance to win a pair of the wellies made out of the recycled chewing gum by tweeting a picture of the gumdrop on the go with the above hashtag, so come on students get tweeting!!

It may have all been a bit of blur (especially if you enjoyed Fresher’s week to the fullest :)) but it’s really easy to #recycle on campus, if you’re not sure refer to your recycling wheel which will be in your accommodation kitchen, if you need another one send me an email on E.L.Dimond@kent.ac.uk.

The main thing to remember is that your green sack is for mixed recycling so paper, card, tins, cans, plastic, juice cartons, foil etc., black sack is for general waste so food and non-recyclable products such as polystyrene, glass is to go separately and any items such as batteries, toner and ink cartridges or electrical items you need to take to your accommodation reception to recycle there. All of the information is on our website and you can also go onto our YouTube channel to watch short videos on how to #recycle different waste items on campus.

And as always if you’re not sure please send us a tweet!

From next week I will start to give more information about the different types of waste and what happens to it so keep your eyes peeled, first theme will be mixed recycling.

So @UKCStudent enjoy your first week of term and remember to keep #recycling!

We’ve now had that time of year that both @UKCStudent and @UniKent spend lots of time getting ready for #FreshersWeek!
