And I’m thirsty….

Well haven’t we been very lucky with this beautiful weather that we are having?! It might be a bit later than everyone hopes but it’s here and it’s glorious 🙂

Believe it or not, there can still be a down side to this weather (not that I want to dampen anyone’s high spirits!) but environmentally there’s some things that we need to think about. As its been SOOO hot we really need to make sure that we are keeping hydrated at all times, this might not be super easy for everyone but it’s really important to make sure that (as well as using plenty of sunscreen) we don’t suffer from sun stroke or anything else because of it.

An essential way to look after yourself during this heat is to make sure that you keep hydrated at all times by drinking plenty of fluids, and much to some peoples dismay our good old friend H2O is THE best way to do this.

You’re probably wondering why is this a problem for the #environment? Well it’s because with more fluids needing to be drunk, the more people are buying drinks in plastic bottles, which then means more plastic bottles are being thrown away (and into the #recycling please!). It’s great that these are being #recycled BUT we can do one better by preventing more waste by #reusing these plastic bottles instead.

Rather than buying a new drink each time your thirsty why don’t you use that plastic bottle (or any type of refillable bottle) and fill it up with water instead? We have water fountains available around campus and you can ask any of the eateries if they will fill your bottle up with tap water. This way you are helping to protect the environment and saving yourself money = happy all round!

I’m not the only one that cares about this issue, Zoological Society of London (ZSL) has been working on the Project Ocean campaign #oneless to reduce the amount of plastic bottles that are disposed of and go into the world’s oceans which is having a detrimental effect on ocean wildlife.

ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo have both taken action by phasing out all single use plastic bottles from their zoos and are offering boxed water and refillable ‘Bobble’ water bottles to refill around their zoos.

Another company that are also working hard to reduce their impact is Selfridges which are the first UK retailer to have removed all single use plastic bottles from their food courts and restaurants, instead they are selling refillable water bottles which has seen a 1,780% increase in sales since 2014! Isn’t that incredible!

Currently a lot of the action with #oneless is very much concentrated to the city of #London but why can’t we bring that to #Kent?! I think we can, and it’s something that I really hope you will all start to do 🙂

If you have any questions about the campaign please sent me a tweet, I would love to hear from you.

Keeeeeep recycling University of Kent, we can do it!

Well haven’t we been very lucky with this beautiful weather that we are having?!
