Welcome back students!

So we’ve now reached the start of the 2018/2019 academic year, I hope your all as excited as we are! A new year feels like a new start, does anyone else feel that way? Let us know how your first week is going @UKCStudent

For now I am just going to go over a few #recycling essentials and to let you all know what you can recycle on campus and what you should be doing 🙂

You will see some changes in the next month or so with new bins being delivered and all new signage but these are still being created as we speak! If you have any ideas on what you would like to see on the bins and/or posters pop us an email to estatesfmcoordinator@kent.ac.uk

In the kitchens in your accommodation you should all have a bin with a green bin liner, a bin with a black liner and possibly a small crate. Your crate is for mixed glass and jars, once this is full take to your nearest bin compound found here and then empty these into the glass recycling bins. The green liner is for the mixed recycling, this includes; paper, card, magazines, tins, cans, bottle lids, tetra pak (juice cartons) and all types of household plastic, plastic packaging and plastic bottles. Once this is full please take to the nearest bin compound and these go into the Eurobins which have a green lid. Lastly the black sack is for food waste, highly contaminated waste such as soaking wet tissues, cling film and polystyrene. Once this bin is full once again empty at your nearest bin compound in a Eurobin with a black lid. All of our bins have posters on so if you’re not sure where they go once you get to the compound they will direct you.

The other items that we anticipate that you may need to recycle are items such as batteries, electrical items and toner/ink cartridges to name a few, these can all be taken to any accommodation reception where they will take them for you and then our Estates Logistics team come to collect them for recycling from our Recycling Hub.

We also promote reuse on campus and as the 3rd point of the waste hierarchy we feel that it is very important to be reusing more and more, it’s also one of the targets in our University of Kent Waste Strategy . Currently we have 2 reuse options to our students these are; donating clothes, shoes, books, bags, cd’s dvd’s, homeware etc. to the British Heart Foundation, our donation points are found here or by donating unused food at one of our food drive events throughout the year, to hear when we have dates booked in please follow our twitter account.

If you’re ever unsure of what you should be doing with your waste and recycling please visit our website for more information and so for this year let’s follow the principle of eat, sleep, recycle, repeat!

We wish you the best of luck for this new academic year and can’t wait to work with you all in increasing sustainability of campus one rubbish bin at a time!!
