I don’t know about all of you but I keep seeing all those videos on Facebook about different #environmentalgoals, I’ve sent myself three this past week to tweet but then thought maybe I should just pick one goal for the month that I want to work on!

One of them was a new phone case that protects your phone AND the planet, we are all so precious about our phones now and you rarely see someone without a phone case! Mostly made out of plastic it makes total environmental sense to design a case that is good for the environment! The Pela case is made from flax straw waste which makes it 100% compostable meaning it won’t stay on the earth for hundreds of years unlike most plastic, another winner is that they are free of BPA, Lead, Cadmium and Phthalate unlike most other cases. As mobile devices now outnumber people on earth we need to protect our investment without polluting the planet oh and its pronounced ‘pee-la’ 🙂

The other video was about a shop called The Soap Dispensary located in Vancouver, Canada that offers a way to shop package free, they first opened their doors in 2011 offering zero waste household solutions, they sell a variety of soaps, cleaners and bathroom products and have expanded next door to serve over 150 types of package free food like cheese, butter, yogurt and tofu, there are even dispensers to full up your almond milk! They have over 25 sauces, oil and vinegars on tap (not like your normal micro pub in the UK!) and a selection of healthy crisps, dips and dumplings. If you don’t have your own containers you can pick some up in store to use again and again #reuse. Items are local and organic supporting the local community. I would love to have a zero waste shop near me, I would do as much of my shopping there as I could!

The last of the videos was about a shop in Edinburgh called the Edinburgh Remakery which is community hub where people go to learn how to fix different things such as furniture #repair, fixing their IT equipment, their computers and mobile phones and also mending their clothes. They don’t just teach people on how to fix things but they also sell affordable reuse goods in partnership with other organisations so that people can go and buy things like a computer starting from £40!

So if I had to pick one as an environmental goal it’s going to be zero waste shopping, it’s easy to buy the phone case and an action I would only be doing once in the short term but I can make a conscious effort to shop the least wasteful way as possible. I’m going to research if there are any local zero waste shops to me but in the meantime if I visit green grocers I can buy my fruit and vegetables without packaging and to the local butcher I can at least lessen the packaging on my meat, follow me on @UniKentRecycle to see how I’m doing, I’ll be tweeting updates as I go!

For now here’s the links to the 3 videos and tweet us which you would be most interested in picking this month, I’d love to hear from you.
