Discover MA348 Mathematical Methods 1

This week we will take a look at the module MA348 Mathematical Methods 1 with Dr Steffen Krusch. Those of you studying for the Mathematics BSc and MMathMathematics with Secondary Education (QTS) BSc, Mathematics & Statistics BSc, Actuarial Science BSc, Financial Mathematics BSc, and Mathematics & Accounting and Finance BSc will take this module in the Autumn term.

This module introduces widely-used mathematical methods for functions of a single variable, with an emphasis on the practical use of these methods. Topics include complex numbers, polynomials, single variable calculus, ordinary differential equations and curve sketching. In the video below Dr Krusch will give you a taste of some of these topics.

Material that will be of relevance to MA348 to review now includes:

  • Sections 1-6, 10, 11, 12.1, 12.2, 12.3, 13, and 19 of the HELM Workbook;
  • Sections on algebra, trigonometry, geometry, functions and graphs, differentiation, differential equations, and complex numbers from Mathcentre;
  • Sections on trigonometry, differentiation, integration, differential equations and complex numbers from Integral Maths.

Note: If your school or college has access to Integral Maths, you can login using your usual details. If not, email highereducation@amsp.org.uk and they will grant you free access.

There is a lot of material, and some of it is covered in more than one place so don’t hesitate to be selective and focus on what is most useful!
