I research war and society in the modern Spanish-speaking world. One of my most recent books is a regional study of Mexico\u2019s\u00a0Cristero\u00a0rebellion\u202f\u2018Insurgency, Counterinsurgency and Policing in Mexico\u2019s Centre-West: Fighting\u00a0Cristeros, 1926-1929\u2019<\/i>\u202f(London: Bloomsbury, 2020<\/i>). During the researching and writing of this project I\u00a0was involved\u00a0in several aspects of public engagement.<\/p>\n

Since\u00a0September 2019,\u00a0I\u00a0have been\u00a0a partner in a museum project\u00a0based in\u00a0the city of\u00a0Guadalupe\u00a0in the Mexican state of\u00a0Zacatecas,\u00a0the region at the centre of my research. This museum will host the first-ever exhibition dedicated to the\u00a0Cristero\u00a0War in the state. For political reasons the memory of the\u00a0Cristero\u00a0civil war has been understated by several stakeholders in Zacatecas.\u00a0My research is helping to inform an exhibition which will represent the war in its diverse aspects beyond the main themes of religion and anti-clericalism. I came to engage with this project\u00a0through\u00a0my work with the local media in the states of Zacatecas and Aguascalientes.<\/p>\n

I have been interviewed\u00a0twice on the subject of my research by a leading cultural affairs programme\u00a0on\u00a0Zacatecas radio (La\u00a0Ele:\u00a028.07.2018<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a003.08.2018<\/a>). I have\u00a0also\u00a0been interviewed\u00a0by the\u00a0<\/i>Heraldo\u00a0de Aguascalientes<\/i><\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0two Zacatecas newspapers. This engagement led to invitations to speak at higher education institutions. My September 2018 guest lecture at the Universidad\u00a0Aut\u00f3noma\u00a0de Zacatecas was well attended and has since been\u00a0highly\u00a0viewed on social media (\u2018Porfiriato,\u00a0revoluci\u00f3n\u00a0y\u00a0cristiada:\u00a0una\u00a0perspectiva\u00a0desde\u00a0Zacatecas<\/a>\u2019). The regional focus of my research has\u00a0generated impact beyond\u00a0the bounds of academia.\u202f In 2020 KMTV filmed me on location in Zacatecas and I was the creative director for the documentary that resulted\u00a0(\u2018La\u00a0Cristiada\u00a0\u2013 A Civil War<\/a>\u2019). The lengthier versions in English and Spanish include my participation in a panel debate.
