Written by Evie Goodwin.<\/p>\n<div class=\"text\">\n<div class=\"text__body\">\n<p>\u00a0 For\u00a0Natalia Sobrevilla Perea, Professor of Latin American History at Kent,\u00a0learning from the past is essential\u00a0for social\u00a0and political\u00a0progression in the present.\u00a0By engaging with the public through\u00a0the\u00a0media\u00a0and\u00a0closely working with the Peruvian government,\u00a0Natalia\u00a0is\u00a0bringing new light to\u00a0Peru\u2019s history:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"blockquote blockquote--pull\">\n<p class=\"blockquote__text\">I believe that in the case of Peru, but everywhere as well, it is very important to know what has happened in the past so that you have a real assessment of the situation..<\/p>\n<footer class=\"blockquote__footer\"><cite class=\"blockquote__cite\"><\/cite><\/footer>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"text\">\n<div class=\"text__body\">\n<p>Between 1980-2000\u00a0Peru\u00a0was\u00a0brought to the brink of collapse.\u00a0Internal conflict between the government and communist revolutionaries left over 70,000 people dead, and a further\u00a0230,000 were displaced.\u00a0During this time\u00a0200,000 men and women were sterilised against their will under the oppressive regime of\u00a0President Alberto Fujimori.<\/p>\n<p>When presented with these facts\u00a0it\u2019s impossible to imagine\u00a0why\u00a0this part of history\u00a0goes\u00a0widely\u00a0unrecognised.\u00a0Natalia\u2019s\u00a0sustained engagement with public and political forces\u00a0is changing this.<\/p>\n<p>The<i>\u00a0Lugar de la Memoria,\u00a0Tolerancia\u00a0e\u00a0<\/i><i>Inclusi\u00f3n\u00a0Social\u00a0<\/i>(LUM),\u00a0located in Lima, was created in\u00a02015\u00a0to commemorate the lives lost during the two\u00a0decades-long period of violence.\u00a0In November 2014\u00a0Natalia\u00a0helped set\u00a0up a new department, the Centre for Documentation and\u00a0Investigation\u00a0(CDI-LUM), to help digitise and organise important artefacts\u00a0related to the conflict. 150,000 primary sources\u00a0are\u00a0now\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lum.cultura.pe\/content\/centro-de-documentaci%C3%B3n-e-investigaci%C3%B3n\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">easily accessible online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous\u00a0workshops and educational activities\u00a0set up by\u00a0Natalia\u00a0with the help of LUM\u00a0have ensured that Peru\u2019s history is embedded in the\u00a0minds\u00a0of younger people. In 2018\u00a0she\u00a0was involved in an essay\u00a0competition in which winners\u00a0received\u00a0a \u00a32000 prize,\u00a0awarded by the University of Kent.\u00a0This led to\u00a0her\u00a0travelling around the country to meet with various youth leaders, teachers,\u00a0students,\u00a0and members of the public to discuss the history of Peru\u2019s independence and its legacy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"blockquote blockquote--pull\">\n<p class=\"blockquote__text\">We need to know our history and accept ourselves in our cultural diversity to be able to keep working to build a country that provides opportunities for all.<\/p>\n<footer class=\"blockquote__footer\"><cite class=\"blockquote__cite\">A student from the city of Tacna<\/cite><\/footer>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"text\">\n<div class=\"text__body\">\n<p>From 2017\u00a0Natalia\u00a0worked closely with the Minister for Culture within multiple governmental commissions established to manage Peru\u2019s celebration of 200 years of independence.\u00a0Natalia kept a sharp focus on indigenous groups throughout her research and utilised this to\u00a0heavily contribute advice on specifically\u00a0how\u00a0marginalised, indigenous\u00a0people\u00a0can be fully included and represented within the celebration.<\/p>\n<p>Engagement with and utilisation of the media have also\u00a0been instrumental in sharing\u00a0Natalia\u2019s\u00a0important research.\u00a0By writing columns in multiple popular newspapers in Peru and being interviewed widely by Latin American Press for radio, TV\u00a0and podcasts, her work has reached global audiences who would not have otherwise had access to\u00a0such\u00a0significant\u00a0information.<\/p>\n<p>Natalia Sobrevilla Perea\u00a0is bringing the lesser-known story of Peru\u2019s violent past into the present through\u00a0close engagement with cultural centres,\u00a0government, educational institutions,\u00a0and the public.\u00a0Her work brings an underrepresented\u00a0part\u00a0of\u00a0Latin-American\u00a0history\u00a0the attention it\u00a0deserves, to create lasting lessons\u00a0for the future.<\/p>\n<p><i>Further information:\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><a href=\"https:\/\/lum.cultura.pe\/educacion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/lum.cultura.pe\/educacion<\/a>\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nataliasobrevillaperea.org\/news\/tv-documentary-on-the-british-immigration-to-peru\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.nataliasobrevillaperea.org\/news\/tv-documentary-on-the-british-immigration-to-peru\/<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Historian Professor Natalia Sobrevilla Perea is connecting Peruvians with their past and helping to shape a fairer future.
