There is a strong evidence base advocating their role in improving equality of opportunity\u00a0for underrepresented groups to access and succeed in higher education.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"blockquote blockquote--pull\">\n<p class=\"blockquote__text\">We hope to build their confidence and creativity so that they can become the next generation of global problem solvers.<\/p>\n<footer class=\"blockquote__footer\"><cite class=\"blockquote__cite\"><\/cite><\/footer>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"text\">\n<div class=\"text__body\">\n<p>The first of our themed campus visit days reflects the University\u2019s cutting-edge research and innovation in the field of \u2018Future Human\u2019.\u00a0Students explore the research question \u2018Can humans live forever?\u2019 through different strands, including the use of science and technology to restore performance and the implications of this from a sociological perspective.\u00a0By taking an active role in interdisciplinary projects, students\u00a0learn about the nature of research\u00a0and\u00a0the way in which it informs the curriculum, whilst also developing their own self-efficacy and sense of belonging in a higher education institution.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Alexandra Martin-Carey,\u00a0Subject Specialist in the Outreach and Widening Participation team, said, &#8220;We are excited to pilot the first of these campus visits in the spring term. We know that the loss of learning during lockdown disproportionately affected disadvantaged students and we hope that our continued focus on working with these groups will\u00a0have a positive impact on their progression and outcomes post-pandemic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gemma Hunt, Subject Specialist in the Division of Natural Sciences and the Division of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics, said: &#8220;Students have seen first-hand the pivotal role that research has played in the COVID pandemic and we want this engagement with research to continue.\u00a0By helping students to\u00a0acquire\u00a0the skills needed to develop and investigate\u00a0an interdisciplinary\u00a0research question\u00a0and to\u00a0communicate\u00a0their findings,\u00a0we hope to build their confidence\u00a0and creativity so that they can become the next generation of\u00a0global problem solvers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Written by Gemma Hunt, Subject Specialist &#038; STEM Outreach Lead, Division of Natural Sciences.
